Private blood testing has grown quickly, and the market now ranges from single-marker tests to panels covering a hundred or more analytes. Some of it is genuinely useful. Some of it produces anxiety and expense without changing anything.

This guide covers what private testing can and cannot tell you, which markers are actually informative, and how to avoid the common traps.

Why people test privately

Common reasons include:

  • Persistent symptoms such as fatigue, low mood or poor sleep without a clear explanation
  • Wanting a baseline while feeling well, to track over time
  • Optimising training, recovery or body composition
  • Monitoring a known issue such as low iron or vitamin D between GP reviews
  • Speed and convenience, without waiting for an appointment

All are reasonable. The important thing is knowing what you want to learn before you choose a panel, rather than picking the largest one and hoping something explains how you feel.

What blood tests do and do not tell you

They are good at detecting deficiencies, screening for common metabolic problems, monitoring known conditions, checking organ function markers, and establishing a baseline you can track.

They are limited in that a normal result does not rule out a problem, an abnormal result is not automatically meaningful, reference ranges are population-based rather than personal, and results fluctuate with hydration, time of day, recent exercise, illness and fasting state.

The most useful mental model is that a blood test is one input, interpreted alongside your symptoms and history. It is not a verdict.

The multiple comparisons problem

This deserves its own section, because it is the single most misunderstood thing about large panels.

Reference ranges are typically set so that around 95 percent of a healthy population falls inside them. That means roughly 1 in 20 results from a healthy person will fall outside the range by chance alone.

Test 100 markers on a completely healthy person and, on average, around five will come back flagged. None of them necessarily mean anything.

This is why very large panels frequently generate follow-up investigation, cost and worry that resolve into nothing. Bigger is not automatically better. A focused panel chosen for a reason usually beats a hundred markers chosen for reassurance.

Markers that are commonly informative

Full blood count

Red cells, white cells and platelets. Detects anaemia and can flag infection or inflammation.

Ferritin and iron studies

Ferritin reflects iron stores and is one of the more genuinely useful tests for unexplained fatigue, particularly in menstruating women and endurance athletes. Worth noting that ferritin rises with inflammation, so it can read misleadingly normal during illness.

Vitamin D

Deficiency is common in the UK, particularly through winter, and it is straightforward to correct.

Vitamin B12 and folate

Relevant to fatigue, and worth checking on plant-based diets or with certain medications.

Thyroid function

TSH plus free T4. Thyroid dysfunction is a genuinely common and treatable cause of fatigue, weight change and low mood.

HbA1c

Average blood glucose over roughly three months. Useful for detecting prediabetes.

Lipid profile

Cholesterol fractions and triglycerides, relevant to cardiovascular risk assessment.

Liver and kidney function

Standard organ function markers, useful as a baseline and for monitoring.

Inflammatory markers

CRP is non-specific but can indicate inflammation warranting further investigation.

Markers to think harder about

Some popular tests are less useful than their marketing implies.

Cortisol is highly variable across the day and responds to acute stress including the blood draw itself. A single random measurement is difficult to interpret.

Testosterone also varies diurnally and should be measured in the morning, ideally more than once, and interpreted with symptoms rather than in isolation.

Food intolerance panels measuring IgG antibodies are not supported as a means of diagnosing food intolerance. IgG largely reflects exposure, not intolerance, and these tests commonly lead to unnecessary dietary restriction. Allergy is different and is tested differently, under medical supervision.

Very large hormone panels in the absence of symptoms tend to generate incidental findings rather than answers.

Getting a reliable result

  • Fast if instructed. Usually 8 to 12 hours for lipids and glucose, water permitted.
  • Test in the morning for anything hormonal, and be consistent when tracking over time.
  • Avoid heavy exercise for 24 to 48 hours beforehand, since it affects several markers.
  • Be well hydrated. Dehydration concentrates the sample and shifts results.
  • Pause biotin supplements for a few days if advised, as high-dose biotin interferes with some assays including thyroid.
  • Do not test during acute illness unless that is the point, because inflammation distorts several markers.
  • Time it to your cycle where reproductive hormones are being measured.

Interpreting results sensibly

Look at trends rather than single points. One measurement is a snapshot. Three over 18 months tells you far more.

In range is not the same as optimal, and out of range is not the same as disease. Both statements are true, and both get abused. Be wary of anyone selling supplements on the basis that a normal result is not optimal.

Take borderline results back for context. A slightly abnormal marker with no symptoms often means nothing. The same marker with matching symptoms may matter.

Share results with your GP where anything significant appears, so it enters your medical record.

Are private blood tests as accurate as NHS ones?

Accredited laboratories work to the same standards. The difference is usually in interpretation and follow-up rather than analysis.

Should I tell my GP?

Yes, particularly for anything abnormal, so it is on record and can be acted on.

How often should I test?

For general baseline tracking, annually is plenty for most people. More often when monitoring something specific or correcting a deficiency.

Can a blood test explain my fatigue?

Sometimes. Iron deficiency, thyroid dysfunction and B12 deficiency are all common and detectable. Often fatigue is multifactorial, involving sleep, stress and activity, and bloods come back unremarkable.

What if everything is normal but I feel unwell?

Normal bloods do not mean nothing is wrong. It means these particular markers are unremarkable. That is genuinely useful information, and it is a reason to keep investigating with your GP rather than to stop.
