What the test measures
The test measures 25-hydroxy vitamin D, the form your body stores and the standard marker of vitamin D status. Vitamin D helps you absorb calcium for strong bones and muscles, and low levels are common in the UK, especially from late winter into spring, because autumn and winter sunlight is too weak for the skin to make it.

What your result means
UK results are commonly read like this: below 25 nmol/L is deficient, 25 to 50 nmol/L may be insufficient for some people, and above 50 nmol/L is generally adequate. Your practitioner explains your number in the context of your symptoms, diet and any supplement you take, and suggests when to recheck, usually about three months after a change.
