Autoimmune and inflammation, Chiswick W4

Autoimmune and inflammation blood tests in Chiswick

Inflammation markers such as CRP and ESR, and antibodies such as ANA, rheumatoid factor, anti-CCP and thyroid antibodies, can help explain joint pain, fatigue or gut symptoms. Our autoimmune blood tests in Chiswick start at £39, need no GP referral and are explained in person by a practitioner.

Autoimmune conditions happen when the immune system attacks the body's own tissues, such as the joints, thyroid, gut, skin or liver. Symptoms often come and go and overlap with other problems, which can make them hard to pin down. Blood tests cannot diagnose an autoimmune condition on their own, but inflammation markers and specific antibodies can show whether further assessment by your GP or a specialist would be sensible.

Results need careful reading. The NHS notes that about 1 in 20 people without rheumatoid arthritis test positive for rheumatoid factor, and NHS guidance explains that ANA is often positive in healthy people, so it is most useful when symptoms already suggest a connective tissue condition such as lupus.

At Omnia Lifestyle in Chiswick, your sample is taken at our clinic at Bedford Corner on The Avenue, a short walk from Turnham Green station, and analysed at the Randox accredited laboratory. You do not need a GP referral. Most results are back within a few working days, and a practitioner explains every result with you in person, with a GP feedback report available on request.

Inflammation markers

CRP, hs-CRP and ESR show whether there is inflammation in the body, though not where it is coming from.

Joints and rheumatology

Rheumatoid factor, anti-CCP and related tests for joint pain, stiffness or swelling, including suspected rheumatoid arthritis or gout.

Lupus, vasculitis and immune proteins

ANA, ANCA, complement and immunoglobulin tests, most useful when symptoms already suggest a connective tissue or immune condition.

Thyroid antibodies

Anti-TPO and anti-thyroglobulin antibodies, which can show whether the immune system is affecting your thyroid.

Coeliac, stomach, liver and type 1 diabetes antibodies

Antibody tests linked to coeliac disease, pernicious anaemia, autoimmune liver conditions and type 1 diabetes.

Questions

How much does an autoimmune blood test cost in Chiswick?

Prices start at £39 for an ESR test and £49 for CRP, hs-CRP or rheumatoid factor. Anti-CCP costs £59 and ANA £99. Our Rheumatology Check, with ESR, anti-CCP, rheumatoid factor and uric acid, costs £79, and Rheumatology Extended adds ANA and smooth muscle antibodies for £179. Every price includes a practitioner review and a GP report on request.

Can a blood test diagnose an autoimmune disease?

Not on its own. Autoimmune conditions are diagnosed by a doctor using your symptoms, an examination and tests together. Antibody results help build the picture: the NHS notes that about 1 in 20 people without rheumatoid arthritis test positive for rheumatoid factor, while people who test positive for anti-CCP are very likely to develop it. Your practitioner will explain what your results mean for you.

What is the difference between CRP and ESR?

Both measure inflammation, in different ways. CRP is a protein made by the liver that rises quickly when inflammation starts and falls as it settles. ESR measures how quickly red blood cells settle in a tube and changes more slowly. Neither shows where inflammation is coming from, so your practitioner reads them alongside your symptoms and other results.

I have a positive ANA. Does that mean I have lupus?

No. A positive ANA is common in healthy people, especially at low levels and in older adults, so on its own it does not mean you have lupus or another autoimmune condition. NHS guidance advises checking ANA when symptoms already suggest a connective tissue disease. Your practitioner will look at the level, your symptoms and your other results, and suggest seeing your GP if needed.

Do I need to keep eating gluten before a coeliac antibody test?

Yes. NICE advises eating some gluten in more than one meal every day for at least six weeks before testing, because cutting it out can give a falsely normal result. If you have already stopped eating gluten, talk to us or your GP before booking. A positive result is usually followed up by your GP with a referral to a specialist.

When should I get urgent medical help instead of a blood test?

Ask for an urgent GP appointment or contact NHS 111 if you have sudden, severe pain and swelling in a joint, especially with a high temperature or feeling unwell, or a new headache with scalp tenderness or jaw pain when eating, which could be temporal arteritis. Any change in your vision with these symptoms needs same day assessment. In an emergency, call 999.
