What the test measures

HbA1c shows your average blood sugar over the past two to three months. Glucose is your blood sugar at the time of the test. Insulin and C-peptide show how much insulin your body is producing, which helps spot insulin resistance before blood sugar rises.

The price includes the blood draw at our clinic, analysis at the Randox accredited laboratory (ISO/IEC 15189, UKAS Lab ID 9329) and a practitioner review of your result. No GP referral is needed.

Who it is for

  • Energy crashes, increased thirst or needing to pass urine more often
  • Weight around the middle, or difficulty losing weight
  • A family history of type 2 diabetes
  • A previous borderline result, or gestational diabetes in pregnancy
  • South Asian, Black African or Black Caribbean heritage, which carries a higher risk

What your result means

In the UK an HbA1c below 42 mmol/mol is normal, 42 to 47 mmol/mol is the pre-diabetes range, and 48 mmol/mol or above suggests diabetes, which a doctor confirms. Pre-diabetes is the stage where changes to diet, activity and weight make the biggest difference. High insulin with normal blood sugar can point to insulin resistance. Your practitioner explains your results and refers you to your GP if they suggest diabetes.

Preparing for your test

Fast for 8 to 12 hours, with water allowed, because glucose and insulin are affected by food. HbA1c itself does not need fasting. We offer early appointments.
