Private blood test, Chiswick W4
Check your iron stores and how much iron your blood is carrying, analysed by Randox and explained to you by a practitioner.
Our Iron Status Check measures ferritin (your iron stores), serum iron, transferrin, total iron binding capacity (TIBC) and transferrin saturation. Ferritin is usually the first marker to fall when iron runs low, often long before anaemia shows on a blood count.
Ferritin can also rise with inflammation, infection, alcohol or liver problems, which is why it is best read alongside transferrin saturation rather than on its own.
The price includes the blood draw at our clinic, analysis at the Randox accredited laboratory (ISO/IEC 15189, UKAS Lab ID 9329) and a practitioner review of your result. A GP feedback report is available on request, and no GP referral is needed.
A ferritin below 30 micrograms per litre is generally taken to confirm iron deficiency. A high ferritin together with a high transferrin saturation can point towards iron overload. Your practitioner explains your results in the context of your symptoms and diet, and whether a recheck or a conversation with your GP makes sense.
Please do not start iron supplements without testing first, as too much iron can be harmful.
A morning appointment is best. No fasting is needed for ferritin. If you take an iron supplement, tell us when you book, as we may ask you to pause it for 24 hours before your test.
The Iron Status Check gives the full picture of your iron. Choose the Anaemia Check if you also want your blood count, B12 and folate.
If you have more than one question, a health check often gives better value than single tests.
Ferritin on its own costs £49 and our Iron Status Check, which measures five iron markers, costs £59, including the blood draw, Randox laboratory analysis and a practitioner review.
Ferritin shows how much iron you have stored, while serum iron and transferrin saturation show how much is circulating in your blood right now. Together they give a reliable picture.
No fasting is needed for ferritin. A morning appointment is best because serum iron varies through the day.
Yes. A GP feedback report is available on request for every test. Let us know when you book or at your appointment and we will prepare a report you can share with your GP.
