What the test measures

A full blood count measures haemoglobin, red cell count, haematocrit and the red cell indices MCV, MCH and MCHC, the total white cell count with neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils and basophils, and platelets. Together they show whether you have anaemia, signs of infection or inflammation, and whether your blood clots normally.

The price includes the blood draw at our clinic, analysis at the Randox accredited laboratory (ISO/IEC 15189, UKAS Lab ID 9329) and a practitioner review of your result. No GP referral is needed.

Who it is for

  • Tiredness, breathlessness or pale skin
  • Frequent infections or slow recovery from illness
  • Easy bruising or bleeding
  • Heavy periods, a plant-based diet or regular blood donation
  • A general baseline as part of looking after your health

What your result means

Low haemoglobin means anaemia, and the size of the red cells helps point to the cause: small cells usually suggest low iron, large cells low B12 or folate. Raised white cells often accompany infection, and low counts can follow a viral illness or some medicines. A single value just outside the range is common and often normal for that person, so your practitioner reads the results together. A full blood count does not measure iron stores, so ferritin is added if anaemia or tiredness is the question.

Preparing for your test

No fasting is needed and the test can be taken at any time of day.
