What the test measures

The Prostate Profile measures total PSA and free PSA, a protein made by the prostate, together with interleukin-8, MCP-1 and epidermal growth factor, combined into a prostate cancer risk score. Looking at free PSA and the risk score alongside total PSA helps put a raised result in context.

The price includes the blood draw at our clinic, analysis at the Randox accredited laboratory (ISO/IEC 15189, UKAS Lab ID 9329) and a practitioner review of your result. No GP referral is needed.

Who it is for

  • Men over 50 who want to discuss PSA testing
  • Men over 45 who are Black or have a family history of prostate or breast cancer
  • Urinary symptoms such as needing to go more often, a weak flow or getting up at night
  • Men tracking a previous PSA result

What your result means

PSA can be raised by prostate cancer, but also by an enlarged prostate, infection or inflammation, recent ejaculation, vigorous exercise such as cycling, or a recent examination. A normal PSA does not completely rule out cancer. That is why PSA is a discussion rather than a simple yes or no: your practitioner explains your result, and a raised or rising PSA is referred to your GP, who may arrange an MRI scan.

Preparing for your test

No fasting is needed. Avoid ejaculation and vigorous exercise, especially cycling, for 48 hours beforehand. Do not test while you have a urine infection; wait six weeks after it has been treated.

Questions

How much is a private PSA test?

The Prostate Profile costs £83 at Omnia in Chiswick, including total and free PSA, newer risk markers, Randox laboratory analysis and a practitioner review.

Who should have a PSA test?

In the UK, men over 50 can ask for a PSA test after discussing its pros and cons, and men over 45 who are Black or have a family history may be advised to consider it earlier.

Can a PSA test diagnose prostate cancer?

No. A raised PSA has many causes, and a normal PSA does not rule cancer out. It is a first step, followed by your GP and usually an MRI if raised.

Which health checks include PSA?

The Randox Everyman includes total PSA, and the male Randox Signature includes PSA with additional prostate markers.
