What the test measures

Our Kidney Health Check measures creatinine and your estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), urea, sodium, potassium and chloride, plus calcium, phosphate, magnesium and albumin. eGFR is the standard measure of how well your kidneys filter waste from your blood.

The Kidney Health Extended adds cystatin C, a filtration marker that is less affected by muscle mass, and uric acid, which is linked to gout and kidney stones.

The price includes the blood draw at our clinic, analysis at the Randox accredited laboratory (ISO/IEC 15189, UKAS Lab ID 9329) and a practitioner review of your result. A GP feedback report is available on request, and no GP referral is needed.

Who it is for

  • You have high blood pressure or diabetes
  • You have a family history of kidney disease
  • You take medicines that can affect the kidneys, such as regular anti-inflammatory painkillers
  • You have had kidney stones or frequent urine infections
  • You are over 60 or have heart disease

What your result means

An eGFR above 90 is normal for most adults, and it naturally falls a little with age. An eGFR below 60 that stays low for more than three months is used to diagnose chronic kidney disease, so a single low result is usually rechecked.

A urine albumin to creatinine ratio can pick up protein leaking into the urine, an early sign of kidney strain, even when eGFR is normal.

Preparing for your test

No fasting is needed, but avoid eating meat for 12 hours before your test, as it can temporarily raise creatinine. Drink normally and avoid very strenuous exercise the day before.

Choose your test

The Kidney Health Check is the best starting point. The U&E covers the core kidney markers, and the extended test adds cystatin C and uric acid.

Questions

How much is a kidney function test?

Our Kidney Health Check costs £49, including the blood draw, Randox laboratory analysis and a practitioner review of your result.

Do I need to fast for a kidney blood test?

No, but please avoid eating meat for 12 hours beforehand, as it can affect your creatinine and eGFR.

What is a normal eGFR?

An eGFR above 90 is normal for most adults. Values between 60 and 90 can be normal, especially with age, if there are no other signs of kidney problems.

Can you send my results to my GP?

Yes. A GP feedback report is available on request for every test. Let us know when you book or at your appointment and we will prepare a report you can share with your GP.
