If you live with migraines, you will know how much of life they take: lost days at work, cancelled plans and the constant worry about when the next attack will come. Acupuncture for migraines is one of the few complementary treatments with recognition from NICE, the body that advises the NHS, and many people use it to reduce how often attacks happen.

This guide explains what the evidence shows, how acupuncture for migraine relief works, how many sessions you need, what it costs in the UK and on the NHS, and what to expect at your first appointment.

Quick answer

Yes, acupuncture can help prevent migraines for many people. NICE guidance on headaches suggests considering a course of up to 10 sessions over 5 to 8 weeks for migraine prevention if preventive medicines are unsuitable or have not worked. Research reviews show acupuncture reduces the number of migraine days for many people, with effects that can last several months. It works best as a preventive course rather than as a one-off treatment during an attack. At Omnia in Chiswick, a 60-minute acupuncture session is £80.

Acupuncture for migraines: what the evidence shows

Does acupuncture help migraines?

The evidence is stronger for migraine than for most conditions acupuncture is used for. A large Cochrane review of randomised trials found that adding acupuncture to usual care reduced how often migraines happened, and that acupuncture was at least as effective as some preventive medicines, with fewer side effects. About half of people who had acupuncture saw their migraine frequency fall by at least half, compared with around a sixth of people on usual care alone.

Two honest caveats. First, trials comparing real acupuncture with sham acupuncture show a smaller difference, which suggests part of the benefit comes from the overall treatment experience as well as the specific points chosen. Second, results vary between people. Some notice a clear change within a few weeks; others notice little. That is why a defined course with a review point makes sense.

What NICE says about acupuncture for migraine

NICE guidance on headaches in over-12s recommends that if preventive treatment with topiramate or propranolol is unsuitable or ineffective, a course of up to 10 sessions of acupuncture over 5 to 8 weeks can be considered. NICE also recommends acupuncture as an option for chronic tension-type headache. This is why acupuncture for migraines is sometimes available on the NHS, although access varies by area and waiting lists are common.

How acupuncture for migraine relief works

  • It calms pain signalling. Needling stimulates nerves in the skin and muscle, which triggers the release of endorphins and changes how the brain processes pain.
  • It relaxes muscle tension. Many migraines are worsened by tight neck, shoulder and jaw muscles. Points in these areas often ease that tension.
  • It may steady the nervous system. Many people feel calmer after sessions, which matters when stress and poor sleep are common triggers.
  • It supports a preventive approach. The aim is fewer and milder attacks over time, not a quick fix in the middle of one.

Which acupuncture points are used for migraines?

Your practitioner chooses points for your pattern rather than following a fixed recipe. Commonly used points include those at the base of the skull (GB20), between the thumb and index finger (LI4), at the temples (Taiyang) and on the top of the foot (LV3). Points in the neck and shoulders are often added when muscle tension is part of the picture. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, your pulse, tongue, sleep and digestion also help guide the plan.

How many sessions do you need?

Most people start with one session a week for 6 to 10 weeks, in line with the NICE course of up to 10 sessions. It helps to keep a migraine diary for a month before and during treatment, so you and your practitioner can see whether the number of migraine days, their severity and your use of painkillers are changing. If there is a clear improvement, sessions are usually spaced out to every two to four weeks. If nothing has changed after around six sessions, it is fair to stop and look at other options.

Acupuncture for migraines: cost in the UK

Private acupuncture in the UK usually costs £50 to £90 a session, with London clinics at the upper end. At Omnia Lifestyle in Chiswick, a 60-minute session is £80 and a 30-minute TCM consultation is £50. A course of six weekly sessions is therefore £480, and a full NICE-style course of 10 sessions is £800. Many private health insurers, including Aviva, AXA Health, Vitality, WPA and Simplyhealth, cover acupuncture, so check your policy. See how much acupuncture costs in the UK for a full comparison.

Acupuncture for migraines on the NHS

Some NHS pain and headache services offer acupuncture, often delivered by physiotherapists or GPs with acupuncture training, but availability is patchy. Ask your GP whether it is offered locally. Read more in can you get acupuncture on the NHS.

Acupuncture for migraines: what to expect

  1. Consultation. Your practitioner asks about your migraine pattern, triggers, medication, sleep and stress, and checks for anything that needs a GP review first.
  2. Treatment. Hair-fine sterile needles are placed and left for 20 to 30 minutes while you rest. Most people find it relaxing.
  3. Review. Progress is checked against your migraine diary at each visit and the plan is adjusted.

Can you do acupuncture for migraines at home?

Acupuncture itself must be done by a trained practitioner. Some people press acupressure points such as LI4 or GB20 at home during an attack, but the evidence for self-acupressure is limited. Home strategies with better support include keeping regular sleep and meal times, staying hydrated, limiting caffeine and tracking triggers. See what causes headaches and how long headaches last.

Who should take extra care

  • If you are pregnant, tell your practitioner, as some points are avoided. See acupuncture in pregnancy.
  • If you take blood-thinning medication or have a bleeding disorder.
  • If you have a pacemaker, as electro-acupuncture is avoided.

When to seek urgent help

Call 999 if you have:

  • A sudden, severe headache that peaks within about five minutes
  • Headache with weakness, numbness, facial drooping, slurred speech or confusion
  • Headache with fever, a stiff neck and a rash
  • Headache after a head injury with vomiting or drowsiness

See your GP if your migraines are changing in pattern, you are over 50 and have a new type of headache, or you are taking painkillers on more than 10 to 15 days a month, which can cause medication overuse headache.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly does acupuncture work for migraines?

Most people need four to six weekly sessions before judging whether it is helping. Some notice fewer attacks sooner.

Can acupuncture stop a migraine during an attack?

It is mainly used to prevent migraines. Some people find a session during a milder attack eases symptoms, but it is not a substitute for your acute migraine medication.

Is acupuncture better than medication for migraines?

Research suggests acupuncture is at least as effective as some preventive medicines for many people, with fewer side effects. It can also be used alongside medication. Discuss any changes to medicines with your GP.

Do the benefits last?

Studies show benefits that can last several months after a course. Many people have occasional maintenance sessions.

What do reviews say about acupuncture for migraines?

Experiences vary. Many people report fewer and milder attacks, while others notice little change. A diary is the most reliable way to judge your own response.
