Can You Get Acupuncture on the NHS? Who Qualifies in 2026

Acupuncture is available on the NHS, but far less often than many people expect. Whether you can get it depends on your condition, what national guidance says about it, and what your local services actually provide.

This guide explains where NICE guidance supports acupuncture, where it no longer does, how NHS access works in practice, and what to consider if you decide to go private.

You can sometimes get acupuncture on the NHS, usually through a physiotherapy service, a pain clinic or occasionally a GP practice. NICE guidance supports considering it for chronic primary pain and for preventing migraine and tension-type headaches. It has not been recommended for low back pain since 2016. Availability varies widely by area, and waiting lists are common.

Who qualifies for acupuncture on the NHS?

There is no automatic right to acupuncture on the NHS. You are most likely to be offered it if:

• You have chronic primary pain, such as long-term widespread pain, and are under a local pain or musculoskeletal service
• You have chronic tension-type headaches, or migraines where preventive medicines have not worked or are not suitable
• Your local physiotherapy or pain service includes clinicians trained in acupuncture

Even then, it depends on what your local NHS services provide. Acupuncture for low back pain on its own, fertility support or general wellbeing is rarely available.

What NICE guidance says

Chronic primary pain

NICE guidance on chronic pain (NG193, 2021) says a single short course of acupuncture can be considered for chronic primary pain, meaning long-term pain that is not better explained by another condition, when delivered within a community setting by a suitably trained practitioner.

Migraine and tension-type headache

NICE guidance on headaches (CG150) says a course of up to ten sessions over five to eight weeks can be considered to prevent chronic tension-type headache, and to prevent migraine when standard preventive medicines are unsuitable or ineffective.

Low back pain

Acupuncture was removed from NICE's low back pain recommendations in 2016, so NHS services rarely offer it for back pain alone. That does not mean it never helps individuals, but it does mean the NHS is unlikely to fund it.

How NHS acupuncture works in practice

• Physiotherapy services. Some NHS physiotherapists are trained in acupuncture and use it within musculoskeletal treatment.
• Pain clinics. Hospital pain services sometimes include acupuncture in a wider pain management plan.
• GP practices. A small number of GPs or practice staff offer it, but this is uncommon.
• Hospices and cancer services. Some use acupuncture for symptom support, such as nausea or pain.

To ask about it, speak to your GP or physiotherapist and ask whether acupuncture is part of the local musculoskeletal or pain service. Expect a limited number of sessions if it is offered.

Why many people go private

• NHS availability is patchy and often has waiting lists
• NHS courses tend to be short, while some conditions need more sessions
• Many uses, such as back pain or fertility acupuncture, are not NHS funded
• Private treatment allows longer appointments and choice of practitioner

Choosing a practitioner

Look for a practitioner who belongs to a recognised professional body, uses sterile single-use needles, takes a full health history and explains what a realistic course looks like.
