A slipped disc, more accurately a herniated or bulging disc, is one of the most common causes of back pain and sciatica. Most improve with time and the right activity, but the pain in the meantime can be severe, and many people look for treatment that eases it while the disc settles.
This guide explains what a slipped disc is, what the evidence says about acupuncture for disc-related pain and sciatica, which points are commonly used, and the warning signs that need urgent care.
Quick answer
Acupuncture can help reduce pain from a herniated or bulging disc, particularly leg pain from sciatica. A 2024 randomised trial published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that people with long-standing sciatica from a herniated disc who had acupuncture reported less leg pain than those given sham acupuncture. It does not repair the disc, but it can make it easier to stay active while the disc recovers, which is what matters most.
Herniated vs bulging disc
- Bulging disc: the disc extends evenly beyond its normal edge. Very common on scans, often without any symptoms.
- Herniated disc: part of the soft inner material pushes through a weakness in the outer layer, and may press on or irritate a nerve.
When a disc in the lower back irritates a nerve root, pain can travel down the buttock and leg. This is sciatica. Most people with a slipped disc improve within weeks to a few months.
What the evidence shows
Research on acupuncture for disc-related pain has grown, particularly for sciatica. The 2024 trial above found reduced leg pain and disability compared with sham treatment, with benefit lasting months after the course. Earlier trials and reviews are more mixed in quality. The fair summary is that acupuncture is a reasonable option for pain relief, especially when combined with exercise and physiotherapy, rather than a stand-alone cure.
Acupuncture points for sciatica
Practitioners commonly use points in the lower back beside the spine, in the buttock, behind the knee and along the outer leg, following the path of the pain. Traditional names you may see include Huantiao in the buttock, Weizhong behind the knee and Yanglingquan below the outer knee, along with points beside the affected spinal level. Points are chosen on assessment, and pressing them yourself is not a substitute for treatment.
What treatment involves
- Assessment of your pain pattern, nerve symptoms, activity levels and any scan results
- Needling of back, buttock and leg points for around 20 to 30 minutes
- Additional techniques such as gentle heat or cupping where suitable
- A movement plan, because staying active is the strongest single factor in recovery
A typical course is six to ten sessions, reviewed after the first few.
What else helps a slipped disc
- Staying as active as pain allows, with short, frequent walks
- Gentle nerve and back exercises; see our sciatica exercises guide
- Physiotherapy for a graded return to normal movement
- Pain relief advice from your GP or pharmacist

When to seek urgent help
Call 999 or go to A&E if back pain or sciatica comes with:
- Numbness around the genitals, buttocks or inner thighs
- New difficulty passing urine, or loss of bladder or bowel control
- Sciatica in both legs, or rapidly worsening leg weakness
These can be signs of cauda equina syndrome, a medical emergency. See your GP promptly for severe or worsening pain, fever, unexplained weight loss or a history of cancer.
Frequently asked questions
Can acupuncture fix a slipped disc?
No treatment other than time and, rarely, surgery changes the disc itself. Acupuncture can reduce pain so you can stay active while it heals.
How many sessions will I need for sciatica?
Usually six to ten, with a review after three or four. Trials often used around ten sessions over four weeks.
Is acupuncture safe with a herniated disc?
Yes, with a trained practitioner. Tell them about any nerve symptoms, blood thinners or recent surgery.
Acupuncture or physiotherapy for a slipped disc?
Both have a role. Many people use acupuncture for pain relief alongside physiotherapy for movement and strength.
How much does it cost?
At Omnia, a 60-minute acupuncture session is £80. See how much acupuncture costs for comparisons.
