Frequently asked

Does acupuncture help fertility?

The short answer

The evidence is mixed. Large trials of acupuncture alongside IVF have not shown higher live birth rates, though some studies report benefits for stress, cycle regulation and certain conditions such as PCOS. Acupuncture can support wellbeing during fertility treatment, but it should not be presented as a way to improve conception rates.

What the largest studies found

A 2018 trial published in JAMA of more than 800 women having IVF found no difference in live birth rates between acupuncture and sham acupuncture around embryo transfer. Earlier, smaller studies had suggested a benefit, which is why acupuncture became popular in fertility clinics, but the better-designed trials have not confirmed it. Reviews of acupuncture for polycystic ovary syndrome, unexplained infertility and male factor infertility show some encouraging signals but no reliable evidence of improved pregnancy rates.

Where it may still have a place

Fertility treatment is stressful, and acupuncture has reasonable evidence for reducing anxiety and improving sleep. Some women find it helps with period pain, cycle regularity and the side effects of fertility medication. Those are legitimate reasons to have it, as long as you understand that the goal is wellbeing during the process rather than a higher chance of conceiving.

What UK advertising rules say

The Advertising Standards Authority has ruled against clinics claiming acupuncture improves fertility or IVF success rates, because the evidence does not support the claim. Any clinic making that promise is not being straight with you.

Our position at Omnia

We offer acupuncture to people going through fertility investigations or treatment for support with stress, sleep and cycle-related symptoms, and we coordinate with your fertility clinic where you want us to. We do not claim it will help you conceive. If you are considering it, book a consultation and we will talk through what is realistic for your situation.

Safety during fertility treatment and pregnancy

Acupuncture from a registered practitioner is safe during IVF cycles and in pregnancy, with certain points avoided. Tell your practitioner where you are in your cycle or treatment at each visit.
