Manual Lymphatic Drainage
Brazilian lymphatic drainage has become one of the most talked-about massages on social media, promising a flatter stomach and lighter legs after a single session. It shares a name with manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), the gentle technique used in clinics for swelling and lymphoedema, but the two are not the same treatment. This guide explains how they differ, what each can and cannot do, and how to choose.
Quick answer
Brazilian lymphatic drainage is a firm, fast, sculpting massage developed in Brazil for de-bloating and body contouring. Manual lymphatic drainage is a slow, feather-light technique that follows the lymphatic pathways, used for swelling after surgery, lymphoedema and fluid retention. If your swelling has a medical cause, such as surgery or lymphoedema, MLD is the better choice once your GP or surgeon agrees. If you want short-term relief from puffiness, a Brazilian massage may feel good, but the effect is temporary and there is little published research on the method itself.
What is Brazilian lymphatic drainage?
Brazilian lymphatic drainage, often linked to the Brazilian therapist Renata França, combines pumping movements over lymph node areas such as the groin and armpits with firm, rapid, sculpting strokes on the stomach, thighs, calves and arms. It is marketed for bloating, puffiness, heavy legs and a more contoured shape.
Most of the visible change comes from moving fluid, so the lighter, flatter feeling is usually short-lived.
What is manual lymphatic drainage (MLD)?
Manual lymphatic drainage is a specialised technique in which a trained therapist uses slow, rhythmic, very light strokes to stretch the skin and encourage lymph fluid towards working lymph nodes. The pressure is deliberately gentle, because the lymph vessels sit just under the skin. MLD is part of decongestive lymphatic therapy for lymphoedema, alongside compression, skin care and exercise, and it is also used after surgery such as liposuction, a tummy tuck or joint replacement, alongside compression and the advice of your surgeon.
Brazilian lymphatic drainage vs MLD: the key differences
- Pressure: Brazilian drainage is firm and fast. MLD is feather-light and slow.
- Purpose: Brazilian drainage is mainly aesthetic: de-bloating and contouring. MLD is used for swelling with a cause, such as surgery or lymphoedema.
- Who gives it: Brazilian drainage is usually offered in beauty salons and spas. MLD is given by therapists trained in lymphatic care, often in clinics.
- After surgery: firm, deep pressure is usually not appropriate over healing tissue. MLD can be timed around your surgeon’s advice.
- Evidence: there is little published research on the Brazilian method. MLD is an established part of decongestive therapy for lymphoedema.
Which one do you need?
Swelling after surgery or lymphoedema
Choose manual lymphatic drainage, and follow your surgeon or lymphoedema team on timing. A firm sculpting massage is not a substitute for medical lymphatic care.
Bloating, puffiness and heavy legs
Either can bring some relief, but the effect of both is short-lived without changes to movement, sleep, salt and hydration. If heavy legs are a regular problem, MLD with Body Ballancer compression therapy gives full-limb support, and our guide on how to improve lymphatic drainage in your legs covers what you can do at home.
Cellulite and body contouring
No massage removes fat. If smoother skin is your goal, a course of LPG Endermologie is designed for cellulite and skin texture. Read how to get rid of cellulite for an honest view of what helps.
Is lymphatic drainage safe?
For most people, yes, but some should not have any lymphatic massage until a doctor agrees: anyone with an active infection, a suspected or recent blood clot (deep vein thrombosis), or untreated heart failure. If you have another serious medical condition, check with your GP first. If one leg suddenly becomes swollen, painful, warm or red, do not book a massage: get urgent advice from NHS 111 or your GP. Call 999 if you also have chest pain or difficulty breathing. If you are pregnant, read about lymphatic drainage in pregnancy first.
