After a single session
Most people notice reduced puffiness, lighter limbs and sometimes a need to pass urine more often as fluid is cleared. That effect typically lasts between one and three days. If the fluid retention was caused by a one-off event such as a long flight or a few days of standing, one session may be all that is needed.
With a course
When the cause is ongoing, the body tends to return to its previous state unless drainage is repeated. A course of four to six sessions over two to three weeks moves more fluid than the body re-accumulates, and the benefit then lasts weeks rather than days. After that, sessions every two to four weeks keep it.
After surgery
Post-operative swelling resolves as healing progresses. Lymphatic drainage speeds that process, so the benefit of each session is cumulative and does not simply wear off. Most surgeons who recommend it suggest starting a few days to two weeks after the procedure and continuing weekly or twice weekly for four to eight weeks.
Lymphoedema and chronic swelling
Where the lymphatic system is damaged, drainage is a management tool rather than a cure. Benefit lasts as long as sessions, compression garments and self-care continue.
Making it last longer
Drink water, move regularly, avoid long periods sitting or standing still, and reduce salt if fluid retention is hormonal or dietary. Body Ballancer compression therapy between manual sessions extends the effect for the legs and abdomen, and is available alongside manual drainage at our Chiswick clinic.
