For Hammersmith

A short hop for a calmer hour

Hammersmith is busy: the Broadway, the flyover, the river traffic. Ten minutes west, our tai chi classes offer the opposite, a small group moving slowly together in a quiet room near Turnham Green.

From Hammersmith, Ravenscourt Park and Brook Green, the Wednesday 9:30am class fits before the day gets going, and the Friday 1:30pm class makes a slow end to the week. Both mix qi gong breathing with Wu-style tai chi, and both have a seated option throughout.

If you have a stiff back from desk work, knees that complain on the stairs, or simply want to feel steadier and calmer, tai chi is a gentle, well-studied place to start. Read the benefits of tai chi.

Your first class

Your first class

Slow, friendly and adapted to you. You will not be out of breath, but your legs will have worked.

  1. Arrive and settle. Your teacher asks about any joint, balance or health concerns, so stances can be adapted from the start.
  2. Qi gong warm-up. Gentle loosening movements and slow breathing to settle the body and mind.
  3. Tai chi, step by step. Wu-style movements taught by demonstration and repetition, with a seated option throughout.
  4. Cool-down and home practice. A short routine you can repeat for ten minutes at home between classes.

Wear loose clothing and flat shoes. No equipment is needed. Read what happens in a tai chi class for more detail.
