Why tai chi after 50

Exercise that keeps you steady and independent

Tai chi trains the things that matter most as we get older: balance, leg strength, joint movement and confidence on your feet. Its slow weight shifts teach the body to stay upright, which is why it is one of the best studied activities for reducing falls in older adults. Read the evidence on tai chi for balance and falls.

The NHS advises adults aged 65 and over to do activities that improve strength, balance and flexibility on at least two days a week, and lists tai chi among them. Our two weekly classes make that easy to reach.

It is also gentle on painful joints. The evidence is strongest for knee osteoarthritis, where tai chi eases pain and stiffness and improves function. See tai chi for arthritis.

Made for you

How our classes are adapted

  • Seated option for every movement. Sit for the whole class, or stand with a chair beside you.
  • Higher, narrower stances for knees and hips, including after joint replacement once your surgeon is happy.
  • A small group, so your teacher knows your name and any conditions you have mentioned.
  • No floor work and nothing fast, so there is no getting up and down.
  • A clinic setting. If dizziness or pain is part of the picture, our balance assessment and physiotherapy are on site.

Your first class

Your first class, step by step

Nothing is rushed. You can sit down whenever you like, and nobody expects you to remember the movements at first.

  1. Arrive and settle. Your teacher asks about any joint, balance or health concerns, so stances can be adapted from the start.
  2. Qi gong warm-up. Gentle loosening movements and slow breathing to settle the body and mind.
  3. Tai chi, step by step. Wu-style movements taught by demonstration and repetition, with a seated option throughout.
  4. Cool-down and home practice. A short routine you can repeat for ten minutes at home between classes.

Wear loose clothing and flat shoes. No equipment is needed. Read what happens in a tai chi class for more detail.

Questions

Tai chi for over 50s: common questions

Am I too old to start tai chi?

No. Trials showing fewer falls recruited people in their sixties, seventies and eighties who had never practised before. You can start at any age.

Can I do the class sitting down?

Yes. Every movement has a seated version, and you can sit for part or all of the class.

I have arthritis or a joint replacement. Is it safe?

In most cases, yes. Stances are made higher and smaller for painful or replaced joints. If you have had surgery recently, check with your surgeon or GP first.

I have had a fall or feel dizzy. Should I come?

Speak to your GP first if you have had a fall in the last year or have unexplained dizziness. A balance assessment at our clinic can also look for treatable causes such as BPPV.

How much are the classes for seniors?

The same as everyone else: £15 per group class, paid per class. One-to-one sessions are £50.

Can I bring a friend?

Yes. Let us know when you enquire and we will save two places.
