Rehabilitation at a glance

Rehabilitation is the structured process of rebuilding strength, movement, balance and confidence after surgery, injury or illness. It is what turns a repaired joint or healed injury back into a body that works. Good rehabilitation is progressive, measured and matched to your goals, whether that is walking without a stick, returning to work or getting back to sport.

Who benefits from rehabilitation?

  • People recovering from knee, hip or shoulder replacement
  • After ligament reconstruction, such as ACL surgery
  • After fractures and spinal surgery
  • After a long illness, hospital stay or period of inactivity
  • Older adults building strength and balance to prevent falls
  • People with neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis

What does rehabilitation involve?

A clear assessment of where you are now, specific and measurable goals, progressive exercise, and regular review. Pain management, scar care, balance training and education about pacing are all part of it.

How we help in Chiswick

  • Physiotherapy: post-operative and post-injury programmes from early mobility to full function.
  • Pixformance: guided strength training with real-time technique feedback.
  • InBody scan: objectively measures muscle returning to an injured limb.
  • Manual lymphatic drainage: for swelling after surgery, when cleared by your surgeon.
  • Red light therapy: recovery support for muscles and soft tissue.
  • Home visits: rehabilitation at home within five miles of the clinic.

What does the evidence say?

Structured exercise-based rehabilitation improves function after joint replacement and ligament surgery, and reduces falls in older adults. Consistency matters more than intensity.

How long does rehabilitation take?

It depends on what you are recovering from. Rehabilitation after a hip or knee replacement often takes three to six months for most daily activities, with improvement continuing for up to a year. ACL reconstruction usually takes nine to twelve months before a return to pivoting sport. After illness or a hospital stay, strength often returns over several weeks to months.

Prehabilitation before surgery

Preparing for surgery, often called prehab, can make recovery easier. Strengthening the muscles around the joint, improving general fitness and practising the exercises you will need afterwards helps many people regain function faster. If you have an operation planned, it is worth starting a few weeks beforehand.

Staying motivated during rehabilitation

Rehabilitation can feel slow. Setting clear, meaningful goals, such as walking to the shops or playing with grandchildren, tracking progress and noticing small milestones all help. Regular reviews let your programme move forward as you improve, so it stays challenging without causing flares.

What to expect at Omnia

We start with your history, any surgical notes or restrictions, and what you want to get back to, then measure strength, movement and balance. You receive a progressive programme with clear goals, delivered in clinic, through guided Pixformance sessions or at home. We re-measure regularly and keep your surgeon or GP informed where needed.

What you can do at home

  • Do your exercises little and often, as prescribed
  • Walk a little further each day
  • Keep a simple log of progress
  • Ask questions: understanding your plan improves results

Questions we are asked

Rehabilitation: your questions answered

What is rehabilitation after surgery?

Rehabilitation is a structured programme to restore movement, strength, balance and confidence after surgery, injury or illness. It is usually led by a physiotherapist and progresses step by step as healing allows.

When should rehabilitation start after surgery?

It usually starts as soon as your surgeon allows, often within days for joint replacements. Early, guided movement reduces stiffness and improves outcomes. We follow your surgeon's protocol and timings.

How long does rehabilitation take?

It depends on the surgery and your starting point. Many people need six to twelve weeks of structured rehab after a joint replacement or ligament repair, with ongoing home exercise for several months.

What does rehabilitation at Omnia include?

A physiotherapy assessment, hands-on treatment, a progressive exercise plan, Pixformance guided training with real-time form correction and, where useful, lymphatic drainage for swelling and InBody tracking of muscle recovery.

Can I have rehabilitation at home?

Yes. Omnia offers home visit physiotherapy across Chiswick and West London for anyone who cannot travel after surgery, with the same clinicians as in our W4 clinic. Many people move to clinic sessions as they recover.
