A tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) is major surgery, and recovery happens in stages. Knowing what is normal each week makes it much easier to plan work, childcare and help at home. This guide brings together timings from the NHS, the Private Healthcare Information Network (PHIN), the Royal College of Surgeons and BAPRAS, and the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS). Your surgeon knows your operation, so their advice always comes first.

Quick answer

Most people spend a few nights in hospital, wear a corset for about six weeks and take four to six weeks off work and exercise. Swelling can take 12 weeks to settle. Your surgeon's advice comes first. Once you are cleared, Omnia Lifestyle in Chiswick W4 offers LPG Endermologie sessions after surgery, with your surgeon's agreement.

What is the recovery time for a tummy tuck?

The NHS says it takes about 6 weeks to fully recover and to see the full effect, with 4 to 6 weeks off work and exercise. PHIN adds a longer view: swelling and tightness can take up to 12 weeks to resolve, and results continue to improve over 12 to 18 months. Both can be true. You can be back to daily life by about six weeks while the area keeps changing for many months.

WhenWhat is usualWhat you do
Hospital stayThe operation takes about 2 to 5 hours under general anaesthetic. Most people stay a few nights. Drains may stay in for 2 to 3 nightsMove as your team advises. An adult takes you home and stays for 24 hours
Week 1Pain and tightness, and it can feel hard to stand fully upright. Dressings and a corset or tummy-control pants are onSpend the week at home. Rest, take short walks indoors, accept help
Week 2Pain eases. You should feel well enough for light activities within a couple of weeksKeep the corset on. No driving for at least 2 weeks, and often longer
Weeks 3 to 4More energy, but you tire quickly. Scars are still healingBuild up walking. Avoid lifting and exercise. Some desk workers ask about returning
Weeks 5 to 6Most routine daily activities return around six weeksYou can usually stop the corset at about six weeks if your surgeon agrees. Ask about work, exercise and driving
Weeks 6 to 12Swelling and tightness keep settling. Numbness is normalBuild up exercise slowly. Strenuous activity and heavy lifting may need longer
3 to 18 monthsOccasional aches can last months. Numbness usually resolves after 12 to 18 months. Scars mature and results keep improvingProtect your scars from the sun and keep your weight stable

Timings differ between sources and surgeons. PHIN gives around two nights in hospital, the Royal College of Surgeons and BAPRAS guide gives one to two nights, and the NHS says a few nights. A mini tummy tuck may be quicker. Use this table for planning, then follow what your surgeon tells you.

What happens in the first week after a tummy tuck?

This is the hardest week. BAPRAS advises spending it at home. You may have drains, which BAAPS explains are often used to remove fluid that can build up in the surgical site. Your stomach will feel tight, and many people walk slightly bent forward at first because the skin has been tightened. Short walks around the house are important for your circulation, and your team will tell you how often to do them.

  • Arrange an adult to stay for the first 24 hours, and more help if you have children.
  • Put what you need within reach, so you do not stretch or lift.
  • Keep your dressings dry and follow your wound care plan.

How long do you wear a corset after a tummy tuck?

The NHS says you will usually wear a corset or tummy-control pants for about 6 weeks. BAPRAS agrees that support garments are usually stopped at about six weeks. The garment supports healing and helps reduce swelling.

When can you drive after a tummy tuck?

The NHS says you cannot drive for a few weeks and should ask your surgeon and your insurer. PHIN says a minimum of 2 weeks and often longer. You need to be able to do an emergency stop without pain or hesitation.

When can you go back to work and exercise?

The NHS suggests 4 to 6 weeks off work and exercise. BAPRAS advises avoiding strenuous activity for six weeks. A desk job is easier to return to than one that involves lifting, and PHIN notes that strenuous activity and heavy lifting may need to wait longer than routine activities. If you had your stomach muscles repaired, ask your surgeon when core exercise is safe.

What about scars and numbness?

All surgery leaves scars. BAAPS says scars can differ from side to side or differ in colour, and may become thick and raised. They first look more obvious, then fade slowly. Numbness below the belly button is normal, and BAAPS says it usually resolves after 12 to 18 months, although it can take several years and some people do not fully recover sensation. BAAPS advises stopping smoking at least 6 weeks before surgery and staying smoke-free, because smoking affects healing.

Can massage or LPG help after a tummy tuck?

Only when your surgeon agrees, and only away from healing wounds. Our guide to lymphatic drainage after surgery explains gentle MLD after a tummy tuck, and lymphatic drainage after liposuction covers combined surgery.

LPG Endermologie is sometimes used later in recovery, once wounds have closed, to work on tight or firm tissue around the area. At Omnia, the Pre/Post Surgery session is £100 for 50 minutes on the Cellu M6 Infinity. Evidence specific to tummy tucks is limited, and a 2025 review notes a lack of large, long-term trials of endermologie, so we will not promise a faster recovery. See LPG after surgery in London for how we plan sessions around your surgeon's advice.

When should you contact your surgeon?

The NHS advises contacting the clinic where you had the operation as soon as possible if you have severe pain or unexpected symptoms. Contact them if you notice:

  • A wound that gets redder, hotter or more painful, opens, or leaks
  • A high temperature or feeling unwell
  • Sudden swelling on one side, or a soft swelling that is growing

Get urgent help for pain, warmth or swelling in one leg, which can be a sign of a blood clot. Call 999 for chest pain or sudden breathlessness.

Who should wait before having LPG?

  • LPG Endermologie is not used on the abdomen in pregnancy.
  • It is not suitable with active cancer, an infection, phlebitis or a blood clot, open wounds or inflamed skin.
  • If you have a circulatory or blood disorder, recent surgery, a pacemaker or an implanted device, get advice from your doctor or surgeon first.
  • Do not start until your surgeon has agreed and your wounds have fully healed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the worst day after a tummy tuck?

Experiences differ, but many people find the first few days hardest, while pain and tightness are at their peak and moving is difficult.

How long is bed rest after a tummy tuck?

You are not usually kept in bed all day. You rest a lot in the first week and walk gently as your team advises, which helps your circulation.

How long until I can stand up straight?

Many people stand more upright as tightness eases over the first couple of weeks. Your surgeon will tell you what to expect.

When will I see my tummy tuck results?

The NHS says about 6 weeks to see the full effect, while PHIN says results keep improving over 12 to 18 months.

Can I have a tummy tuck on the NHS?

It is not usually available on the NHS. Our guide to loose skin removal surgery costs covers NHS funding and prices.
