LPG Endermologie
Liposuction is often sold as a quick procedure, so the length of recovery can surprise people. The bruising fades in weeks, but swelling can hide your result for months. This timeline brings together what the NHS and the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) say, so you know what is normal. Your surgeon knows your operation, so their advice always comes first.
Quick answer
Most people walk on the day of liposuction, wear compression for several weeks, restart gentle exercise at three to four weeks and avoid strenuous activity for 10 to 12 weeks. Swelling can last six months. Your surgeon's advice comes first. Later, Omnia Lifestyle in Chiswick W4 offers post-surgery LPG Endermologie with your surgeon's agreement.
How long is liposuction recovery time?
Most of the recovery happens in the first 4 to 6 weeks, but full recovery takes longer. The NHS says the area can take up to 6 months to settle completely. BAAPS says your final shape should appear within one to six months. Larger areas take longer, as does treating several areas at once.
Liposuction recovery week by week
| When | What is usual | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Day of surgery | Most people stay overnight. You get out of bed the same day. An adult takes you home and stays for 24 hours after a general anaesthetic | Rest, drink fluids, move gently |
| Days 2 to 7 | Soreness, bruising and swelling. Stitches come out at about a week unless they dissolve | Wear compression day and night, except in the shower. Walk little and often |
| Weeks 2 to 3 | Bruising fades. Swelling can still feel firm | BAAPS says compression can move to daytime only after 2 weeks. Keep walking |
| Weeks 3 to 4 | You feel more normal, though the area may feel numb or lumpy | Start gentle exercise, if your surgeon agrees |
| Weeks 4 to 8 | Bruising has usually gone by about a month. Numbness often fades in this period | Continue daytime compression for the 4 to 6 weeks BAAPS suggests, unless told otherwise |
| Weeks 10 to 12 | Most people feel close to normal, though swelling may remain | Build back to strenuous activity, starting gently |
| Up to 6 months | Deep swelling and lumpiness settle. Your final shape appears | Keep your weight stable to hold the result |
The NHS says only that compression should be worn for several weeks, and BAAPS is more specific. If your surgeon's instructions differ from this table, follow your surgeon.
When can you go back to work after liposuction?
The NHS gives no set figure, because it depends on your job and how much of your body was treated. BAAPS says that if only a small amount of fat was removed, you should be able to return within a few days, and that larger treatments may need more time. A physical job takes longer than a desk job. Ask your surgeon about driving too, since the NHS also gives no fixed date.
When can you exercise after liposuction?
Walking and general movement are usually fine from the start, and they help your circulation. The NHS advises avoiding strenuous activity for the first couple of weeks and says gentle exercise can start at around 3 to 4 weeks. Both the NHS and BAAPS advise avoiding strenuous activity for 10 to 12 weeks, so build up slowly and check with your surgeon first.
Is VASER liposuction recovery different?
VASER is an ultrasound-assisted form of liposuction, and many people search for its recovery time separately. The NHS and BAAPS pages we read do not give a separate timeline for it, so we will not quote one here. Ask your surgeon how the method they use, the size of the area and the amount removed will affect your recovery.
Why does my skin feel lumpy after liposuction?
Lumpiness is common while healing tissue settles. BAAPS says the lumpiness and swelling of deep bruising can take up to six months to disappear. Numbness is also common, and the NHS says it should go away in 6 to 8 weeks, although persistent numbness can last for months. If a lump grows, feels fluid-filled, or the area gets more painful, contact your surgeon, as a fluid collection may need draining.
Does liposuction get rid of cellulite?
No. BAAPS says liposuction is not a weight-loss treatment and that it does not treat cellulite. Cleveland Clinic agrees that it takes out deep fat, not necessarily cellulite. Dimpling can even look more obvious once the volume under the skin has gone. If that is your concern, read how to get rid of cellulite.
Can massage or LPG help recovery?
Only when your surgeon agrees. Manual lymphatic drainage is a gentle option that some surgeons suggest in the early weeks. Our guide to lymphatic drainage after liposuction covers when to start and how often, and we do not repeat it here.
LPG Endermologie is sometimes used later in recovery, once your surgeon is happy and your wounds have healed. Sessions at Omnia use the Cellu M6 Infinity, and the Pre/Post Surgery session is £100 for 50 minutes. The evidence is limited. A 2025 review of endermologie reported that use around liposuction may support resolution of swelling, but a comparison study found no significant difference in body contour. See LPG after surgery in London for how we work with your surgeon's plan.
When should you contact your surgeon?
- Increasing redness, heat or pain around an incision
- Fever or feeling generally unwell
- Discharge from a wound, or a wound that opens
- A new soft swelling that is growing
Seek urgent help for swelling, pain or warmth in one calf, which can be a sign of a blood clot. Call 999 for chest pain or sudden breathlessness. Do not book any treatment for these symptoms.
Who should not have LPG after liposuction?
- LPG Endermologie is not used on the abdomen in pregnancy.
- It is not suitable with active cancer, an infection, phlebitis or a blood clot, open wounds or inflamed skin.
- If you have a circulatory or blood disorder, recent surgery, a pacemaker or an implanted device, get advice from your doctor or surgeon first.
- Do not start until your surgeon has agreed, and tell us the date and type of your operation.
