Turkey neck is the common name for loose, crinkled skin and vertical bands under the chin. It tends to creep up with age, and then one photograph makes it impossible to ignore. Social media is full of exercises and tapes that promise to fix it. This guide explains what really causes it, what helps at home, and which treatments are worth considering at each stage.

A no-needle treatment for the neck and jawline, at our Chiswick clinic. Your first LPG Endermologie visit is a 60-minute Discovery Session for £99, including a consultation and a full treatment. Book online or call 020 4515 0000.

Quick answer

You cannot fully reverse turkey neck at home, but sun protection, skincare and not smoking slow it down. Mild to moderate looseness can be firmed with skin treatments such as LPG Endermologie at Omnia Lifestyle in Chiswick W4. Heavy folds or strong neck bands usually need a surgical opinion, because only surgery removes skin.

What causes turkey neck?

Cleveland Clinic describes several causes, and most people have more than one:

  • Ageing. Skin loses elasticity, and cheek skin can sag towards the jawline and neck.
  • Weaker neck muscles. The platysma, the thin sheet of muscle at the front of the neck, can weaken or separate, which creates vertical bands.
  • Sun damage and smoking. Both reduce the skin's elasticity.
  • Weight change. Extra fat can collect under the chin, and losing weight can leave skin behind.
  • Genes. Bone structure and neck anatomy are inherited.
  • Some medicines. Steroids, for example, can affect fat around the neck.

Why do I suddenly have a turkey neck?

It usually has not appeared suddenly. Change builds slowly, then something brings it to your attention: a video call, a photograph, weight loss or a new haircut. Fast weight loss can also make it more obvious in a short time. If you have a new lump, sudden swelling or pain in your neck, that is different, and you should see your GP.

Will losing weight help turkey neck?

Sometimes. If fat under the chin is the main problem, losing weight may help. Cleveland Clinic says the result depends on your skin: younger people with healthy skin may see improvement, while older people and smokers with less elastic skin may not. If your neck is already slim and the skin is loose, losing more weight can make it look looser.

Do turkey neck exercises work?

Possibly a little, but do not expect much. Cleveland Clinic says daily neck exercises can strengthen the muscles and may help the look of the neck, without pointing to evidence of results. A small pilot study in JAMA Dermatology linked a 20-week facial exercise programme with a fuller look to the cheeks, but it did not test turkey neck. A 2025 review of facial exercises and massage found that reported improvements were confined to local areas.

Exercises cannot shrink stretched skin. If you would like to try them, keep them gentle:

  • Chin lift. Sit tall, tilt your head back slightly and press your tongue to the roof of your mouth. Hold for 5 seconds, then repeat 10 times.
  • Chin tuck. Draw your chin straight back, as if making a double chin, and hold for 5 seconds. Repeat 10 times.
  • Jaw push. Push your lower jaw gently forward and hold for 5 seconds. Repeat 10 times.

Stop if you feel pain or dizziness. If you have a neck problem, read neck pain exercises first and take advice.

Which turkey neck remedies help at home?

  • Sunscreen. Use it on your neck and chest every day. This protects the collagen you still have.
  • Retinoids. These can improve the texture of sun-damaged skin over months, although they do not lift it. Our crepey skin guide explains how to use them.
  • Moisturiser. Hyaluronic acid or ceramides make fine lines look softer while you keep using them.
  • Do not smoke. Smoking speeds up collagen loss.
  • Be wary of tapes and straps. These hide the neck for a while but do not change the skin.

What is the best treatment for turkey neck?

It depends on how much loose skin you have and whether bands or fat are involved. Cleveland Clinic warns that many non-surgical treatments promise great results but often give subtle changes, which is a fair warning for any treatment, including ours.

Omnia does not offer injectables or surgery, and we will say so if one of them would suit you better.

How does LPG Endermologie help a turkey neck?

We use the Cellu M6 Infinity, which has a fine treatment head for the face and neck. It works the skin with controlled suction and rhythmic mechanical action, with no needles, no heat and no downtime. The aim is firmer, smoother skin along the jaw and neck over a course. Evidence for LPG on the neck specifically is limited, and research on LPG in general is mixed, so we set expectations honestly at your first visit. Results vary, and no treatment is permanent.

Your first visit is a 60-minute Discovery Session for £99. Most people notice change after 6 to 8 sessions, then a weekly course and monthly maintenance. See turkey neck treatment in London for how a course is planned, and non-surgical facelift in London if your jawline is also a concern. Our guide on how to get rid of jowls covers that area in more detail.

When is a neck lift the better option?

If the skin hangs in a fold or bands stand out strongly, surgery is the only way to remove skin. Neck lifts and facelifts are described by Cleveland Clinic as the most definitive option. They involve scars, about 2 to 4 weeks of recovery after a facelift according to the NHS, and surgical risks. See surgery costs in the UK for what you might pay.

Who is LPG Endermologie not for?

  • LPG Endermologie is not used on the abdomen in pregnancy.
  • It is not suitable with active cancer, an infection, phlebitis or a blood clot, open wounds or inflamed skin.
  • If you have a circulatory or blood disorder, recent surgery, a pacemaker or an implanted device, get advice from your doctor or surgeon first.
  • See your GP first for any new lump in the neck, swelling, or skin change you cannot explain.

Frequently asked questions

What is a turkey neck?

It is the common name for loose, crinkled skin and vertical bands at the front of the neck, usually caused by ageing, sun damage and weight change.

Can you get rid of turkey neck without surgery?

You can improve mild to moderate looseness without surgery, but heavy folds of skin do not usually respond well.

What age does turkey neck start?

Many people notice it from their forties or fifties, although sun damage, smoking and weight loss can bring it on earlier.

How long does treatment take to work?

With LPG Endermologie, most people notice change after 6 to 8 sessions. Results vary, and maintenance helps keep them.

Do neck creams work for turkey neck?

They can make skin look smoother while you use them, and retinoids improve texture over months, but creams do not tighten loose skin.
