Our acupuncture team trained as doctors first. Dr Wu Youzhong holds a Bachelor of Clinical Medicine with Honours alongside his Master of Science from the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine; Dr Jialin Zhu spent over a decade in Shanghai hospital practice managing around 150 outpatient cases a week; Dr Shufen Zhang brings more than 35 years of clinical acupuncture across China and London. Between them sit decades of hospital-grade Chinese medicine, now practised from Chiswick.

That training shows in the details: proper pulse and tongue diagnosis before any needle is placed, treatment plans that combine acupuncture with cupping, gua sha, Tui Na and herbal guidance where appropriate, and honest advice when acupuncture is not the right tool for your problem.

How it works

What the needles actually do

Ultra-fine needles placed at specific points stimulate sensory and autonomic nerve fibres, prompting the release of endorphins and influencing how the nervous system processes pain. NICE recommends acupuncture as a treatment option for chronic primary pain and for migraine prevention, and it is widely used within the NHS for pain management.

Most people describe sessions as deeply relaxing: a brief dull sensation as each point is placed, then twenty to thirty minutes of stillness in which many fall asleep.

Does acupuncture hurt?
The needles are hair-fine, nothing like injection needles. Most people feel a brief dull sensation as each point is placed, then nothing, and many fall asleep during the resting phase.
Is there evidence acupuncture works?
For some conditions, yes. NICE recommends acupuncture as an option for chronic primary pain and for migraine prevention. For other uses the research is still developing, and we will always be honest at assessment about what the evidence supports for your situation.
How many sessions will I need?
Acute problems often respond within three to six sessions; long-standing conditions usually need a longer course. Your doctor sets honest expectations at your first visit.
Can I choose which doctor I see?
Yes. You can request Dr Wu, Dr Jialin or Dr Shufen when booking, or call us and we will match you to the practitioner whose expertise best fits your needs.
Is it safe?
Acupuncture is very safe in trained hands. We use single-use sterile needles exclusively, and your practitioner adapts treatment if you are pregnant, take blood thinners or have a pacemaker.
