Immune support at a glance

A healthy immune system is built on daily foundations: sleep, nutrition, activity, stress management and correcting any deficiencies. Many products claim to boost immunity, but in healthy people the aim is not to boost it, which is not possible, but to keep it working well. This is especially relevant before winter, during demanding periods and in recovery from illness.

The foundations of immune health

  • Sleep: short sleep increases susceptibility to infection.
  • Nutrition: adequate protein, vitamins and minerals from a varied diet.
  • Vitamin D: UK advice is to consider a daily supplement from October to March.
  • Movement: regular moderate exercise supports immune function.
  • Stress: long-term stress suppresses immune responses.
  • Gut health: fibre and fermented foods support a diverse gut microbiome.

How we help in Chiswick

What does the evidence say?

Correcting a vitamin D deficiency may reduce respiratory infections. Sleep, exercise and diet have consistent evidence. Most immune-boosting supplements lack good evidence, and we are open about that. Read what supplements should I take? and how to boost your immune system.

Do immune-boosting supplements work?

For most healthy people, supplements do not boost immunity beyond normal. The exceptions are correcting a proven deficiency, such as vitamin D, iron or B12. Zinc may slightly shorten colds if taken early, but high doses can cause side effects. Always check supplements against any medication you take.

Gut health and immunity

A large part of the immune system is linked to the gut, and a varied gut microbiome supports healthy immune responses. Eating a wide range of plant foods, plenty of fibre and some fermented foods, such as yoghurt or kefir, supports gut health. Probiotic supplements have mixed evidence and are not needed by everyone.

Exercise and immunity

Regular moderate exercise, such as brisk walking, cycling or swimming, is linked with fewer respiratory infections and better responses to vaccines. Very prolonged, intense training without enough recovery can temporarily lower defences, so balance and rest days matter.

What to expect at Omnia

You receive practical, personalised advice, with practitioner-guided supplement recommendations only where there is a clear reason, and supportive therapies such as tai chi or Ayurveda if helpful.

What you can do at home

  • Eat fruit, vegetables, beans and wholegrains daily

Questions we are asked

Immunity Enhancement: your questions answered

How can I strengthen my immune system?

The best evidence supports sleeping seven to nine hours, eating a varied diet with plenty of vegetables and fruit, staying active, not smoking, limiting alcohol, managing stress and keeping up to date with vaccinations.

Do supplements boost the immune system?

Most people do not need supplements if they eat well. Vitamin D is the exception: the NHS advises considering a daily supplement in autumn and winter. A blood test can show whether you are low in vitamin D, iron or B12.

Can acupuncture boost immunity?

There is limited evidence that acupuncture directly boosts the immune system. It may help with stress and sleep, which both affect immune health. We are honest about what it can and cannot do.

Why do I keep getting ill?

Frequent infections are often linked to poor sleep, stress, young children at home or low vitamin D. See your GP if you get unusually frequent, severe or long-lasting infections, as they may want to investigate further.

How does Omnia support immune health in Chiswick?
