Frequently asked

Can I get a private blood test without a GP referral?

The short answer

Yes. Private blood tests do not require a GP referral. You choose the panel, have the sample taken at a clinic, and receive the results directly. At Omnia in Chiswick you can book Randox blood testing online, and we review the results with you and provide a report you can share with your GP if anything needs following up.

How private blood testing works

Unlike the NHS, where a GP has to decide a test is clinically justified, private testing is available on request. You pick a single test or a panel, book an appointment for the blood draw, and the results come back to you rather than to a doctor. No referral letter, no waiting for a GP appointment first, and no need to explain why you want to know.

Common reasons people test privately

A general health check when nothing is wrong but you want a baseline. Tracking a marker such as vitamin D, cholesterol or thyroid over time. Checking something a GP has not tested, or has tested but you would like to look at more closely. Symptoms such as tiredness, low mood or weight change where you want data before a GP conversation. Athletes and people on training or nutrition programmes monitoring recovery and iron status.

What private testing does not replace

A private blood test is information, not a diagnosis. If a result is abnormal, your GP or a specialist is the route to investigation and treatment, and most GPs are happy to receive a private report. If you have symptoms that are getting worse, unexplained weight loss, bleeding or severe pain, see a doctor first rather than testing privately.

What to look for in a provider

An accredited laboratory, a qualified person taking the sample, clear information about what each marker means, and someone to talk to about the results. A list of numbers with no interpretation is where private testing goes wrong.
