Vitamins and Minerals Extended blood test in Chiswick

Vitamins and Minerals Extended measures vitamin D, several forms of B12 and folate, iron studies, zinc, copper, magnesium and calcium, for detailed nutrition tracking, restrictive diets or concerns about poor absorption.

What the test measures

This panel looks in depth at the vitamins and minerals most often linked with tiredness, low mood, hair and skin changes and poor recovery. It measures vitamin D, which supports bone and muscle health, and both total and active B12, which together give a clearer view of B12 status than either alone. Folate is measured in serum and inside red cells, where it reflects longer term intake.

Iron is assessed through ferritin, serum iron, transferrin, total iron binding capacity and transferrin saturation, which together separate low iron stores from other causes of abnormal iron results. Mineral markers include zinc, copper, adjusted calcium with albumin, and magnesium measured both in serum and within red cells, which can be more informative about longer term magnesium status.

The price includes your sample taken at our Chiswick clinic, analysis at the Randox accredited laboratory, a review of your result with an Omnia practitioner, and a GP feedback report on request.

Who it is for

  • You follow a vegan, vegetarian or otherwise restrictive diet.
  • You have a condition or past surgery that affects absorption, such as coeliac disease or bariatric surgery.
  • You have ongoing tiredness, low mood, brittle nails or hair thinning.
  • You take supplements and want to check whether your levels are where you expect.
  • You are an athlete or train hard and want detailed nutrition tracking.

Understanding your result

Your report places each value beside the laboratory reference range. Low ferritin is the most reliable sign of low iron stores, although ferritin rises with inflammation. Low B12 or folate can cause anaemia and nerve symptoms, while low vitamin D is common in the UK, particularly in winter. Zinc and copper often move in opposite directions, so very high zinc intake can lower copper.

High results matter too, for example very high ferritin or vitamin D, which may reflect supplement use or other conditions. A result outside the range is a prompt for discussion, not a diagnosis, and your practitioner will help you decide on any changes.

Preparing for your test

A morning appointment is preferable because serum iron and zinc vary through the day, and we confirm whether a fasting sample is advised when you book. Stop iron supplements for at least 24 hours before the test, and tell us about B12 injections, multivitamins and high-dose biotin, which can affect some immunoassays.

For a shorter list, our Vitamins and Minerals Check covers the core markers, and our vitamin D and vitamin B12 tests look at single nutrients. Our hub page also brings together every blood test and price in Chiswick.
