Globulin blood test in Chiswick

A globulin blood test measures a group of blood proteins that includes antibodies and transport proteins. It is booked to look at liver function, immune activity and nutrition, usually alongside albumin and total protein.

What the test measures

Blood contains two main groups of protein: albumin and globulins. Globulins are a varied family. Some are made by the liver and carry hormones, iron and other substances around the body, while others, the immunoglobulins, are antibodies made by the immune system to fight infection.

Globulin is usually calculated by subtracting albumin from total protein, and the ratio between albumin and globulin is also used as a guide. Because it combines several different proteins, globulin gives a general signal that is then explored with more specific tests if needed.

The price includes the blood sample taken at our Chiswick clinic, analysis at the Randox accredited laboratory, a practitioner review of your result with you, and a GP feedback report on request.

Who it is for

  • You are reviewing your liver health alongside other liver markers.
  • A previous blood test showed an unusual total protein or albumin result.
  • You have recurrent infections and want a first look at immune proteins.
  • You have an inflammatory or autoimmune condition and want to track your protein levels.

Understanding your result

Your report shows your globulin value with the laboratory reference range. A raised globulin can be seen with long-term inflammation, chronic infection, liver disease, autoimmune conditions and, less commonly, conditions where one type of antibody is overproduced. Dehydration can also raise it slightly.

A low globulin can occur with reduced antibody production, some kidney or gut conditions where protein is lost, or poor nutrition. Your practitioner may suggest more specific tests such as immunoglobulin levels if your value is unusual. A result outside the range is a prompt for discussion, not a diagnosis.

Preparing for your test

No fasting is needed for a globulin test. Drink water as usual so you are not dehydrated, as this can concentrate blood proteins. Tell us about any recent infections and the medicines you take, including steroids or immune treatments. Your usual prescribed medicines can be taken as normal unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Globulin is calculated within Omnia Signature, and the Liver Function Check includes total protein and albumin. You can also browse every blood test and price in Chiswick.

Questions

How much is a globulin test in Chiswick?

A globulin blood test at Omnia Lifestyle costs £59. The price covers your sample in Chiswick, analysis at an accredited laboratory, a practitioner review and a GP feedback report on request.

What is the difference between albumin and globulin?

Albumin is a single protein made by the liver that helps hold fluid in the blood vessels. Globulins are a group of proteins that include antibodies and carrier proteins.

What does a high globulin mean?

It often reflects ongoing inflammation or immune activity, but it can have several causes. Your practitioner will consider your symptoms and may recommend more specific tests.

Is globulin the same as immunoglobulin?

Immunoglobulins are one part of the globulin group. Measuring IgA, IgG and IgM separately gives more detail about antibody levels.
