Type 1 Diabetes Risk and Antibodies combines a genetic risk score with the four main diabetes autoantibodies, giving people with a family history of type 1 diabetes a view of both inherited tendency and current immune activity.
Type 1 diabetes develops when the immune system damages the cells in the pancreas that make insulin. Two kinds of information help estimate how likely this is. The first is inherited: certain gene variants, particularly in the HLA region, are more common in people who develop type 1 diabetes. The second is current: autoantibodies that appear in the blood once the immune process has started, often years before symptoms.
This test calculates a type 1 diabetes genetic risk score from a set of known risk variants and measures the four autoantibodies GAD65, IA2, IAA and ZnT8. Combining them can help put a positive or negative antibody result into context and guide how closely you might be monitored.
The price includes your sample taken at our Chiswick clinic, analysis at the Randox accredited laboratory, a review of your result with an Omnia practitioner, and a GP feedback report on request.
Your report shows each antibody against the laboratory reference range and gives your genetic risk score with an explanation of what it means. No antibodies and a lower genetic score suggest a lower likelihood of type 1 diabetes. Two or more antibodies indicate an active autoimmune process, whatever the genetic score.
A higher genetic score is a tendency, not a prediction, and a lower score does not remove all risk. Genetic results are best discussed with your practitioner and, where needed, a genetic counsellor or diabetes specialist. Symptoms such as strong thirst, frequent urination or weight loss without trying need a same-day call to your GP or NHS 111, not a test booking.
No fasting is needed and the test can be taken at any time of day. Let us know if you already use insulin, because this can lead to insulin autoantibodies that are harder to interpret, and if you have had a recent blood transfusion or bone marrow transplant, which can affect genetic testing.
If you want to check current blood sugar as well, our HbA1c and diabetes tests are a natural partner, and the coeliac blood test covers a closely related condition. Should you want to compare, our main page shows every blood test and price in Chiswick.
Type 1 Diabetes Risk and Antibodies costs £199 at Omnia Lifestyle in Chiswick. This includes your blood sample, genetic and antibody analysis at the Randox accredited laboratory, a practitioner review and a GP feedback report on request.
It combines several gene variants linked with type 1 diabetes into one score that reflects your inherited tendency compared with the wider population.
The antibody-only test shows current immune activity. This test adds the genetic score, which helps interpret antibody results and does not need to be repeated.
No test can say that for certain. Results describe likelihood, and your practitioner will discuss what they mean for monitoring and next steps.
