A blood lead test measures how much lead is in your bloodstream. It is booked after possible exposure, for example renovating an older home with lead paint, certain hobbies or jobs, or using some imported remedies or cosmetics.
Lead is a heavy metal with no known role in the body. It can be absorbed by breathing in dust or fumes, or by swallowing it, and it builds up over time, especially in bones. Even at low levels it can affect the nervous system, kidneys, blood pressure and the production of red blood cells, and it is particularly harmful during pregnancy and in young children.
Common sources in the UK include dust from old lead paint during sanding or renovation, lead water pipes in older properties, certain jobs such as battery recycling, demolition and stained glass work, shooting ranges, and some traditional remedies, cosmetics such as kohl or surma, and imported ceramics. A whole blood lead level reflects recent and ongoing exposure over the past few weeks.
The price includes your sample at our Chiswick clinic, analysis at the Randox accredited laboratory, a review of your result with an Omnia practitioner, and a GP feedback report on request.
Your report shows your blood lead level, usually in micromoles per litre, with the laboratory reference range. Most people in the UK have very low levels. A higher result means exposure has occurred, and the level helps decide whether simply removing the source is enough or whether medical assessment is needed.
A result outside the range is a prompt for discussion, not a diagnosis, and your practitioner will help you think about likely sources and talk through sharing the result with your GP. Workplace exposure in the UK is covered by specific regulations, and high levels in children or during pregnancy need prompt medical advice. The UK Health Security Agency provides guidance on reducing exposure at home.
There is no need to skip meals. Wash your hands and arms well before your appointment if you have been working with lead, so the sample is not contaminated by dust on the skin. Tell us about any supplements, remedies or cosmetics you use, and whether you are pregnant.
Because lead can affect red blood cells, a Full Blood Count is a useful companion test, and our kidney function tests check for any effect on the kidneys. You can see every blood test and price in Chiswick, including other checks.
A lead blood test costs £129 at Omnia Lifestyle. The price includes your blood sample at our Chiswick clinic, analysis at the Randox accredited laboratory, a practitioner review and a GP feedback report on request.
The first step is always to find and remove the source of exposure. Very high levels may need specialist treatment, which your GP can arrange.
Not fully. Blood lead reflects recent exposure over the past weeks. Lead stored in bone from long ago may not show clearly in a blood test.
If you think a child may have been exposed, speak to your GP, as children are more sensitive to lead and need age-appropriate assessment.
