GGT blood test in Chiswick

A GGT blood test measures gamma-glutamyltransferase, a liver and bile duct enzyme. It is often booked to look at liver health, alcohol-related strain or to help explain a raised ALP on a previous liver test.

What the test measures

Gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT) is an enzyme found in many tissues, with the highest levels in the liver and the bile ducts. When liver cells or the bile ducts are under strain, more GGT enters the bloodstream. It is one of the most sensitive liver enzymes, meaning it rises early, although it does not say exactly what has caused the change.

GGT is commonly used together with alkaline phosphatase (ALP). If both are raised, the source is more likely to be the liver or bile ducts, whereas a raised ALP with normal GGT points more towards bone. GGT is also influenced by alcohol intake, excess weight and some medicines.

The price includes the blood sample taken at our Chiswick clinic, analysis at the Randox accredited laboratory, a practitioner review of your result with you, and a GP feedback report on request.

Who it is for

  • You want to understand how your liver is coping with your current alcohol intake.
  • A previous liver test showed a raised ALP or other enzyme.
  • You are carrying extra weight around the middle or have been told you may have a fatty liver.
  • You take medicines that can affect liver enzymes, such as some anti-epilepsy drugs.
  • You are making lifestyle changes and want a marker to track.

Understanding your result

Your report shows your GGT against the laboratory reference range. A mildly raised GGT is common and is often linked with regular alcohol use, a fatty liver, being overweight or certain medicines. Higher values can occur with bile duct blockage, hepatitis or other liver conditions, and are read alongside ALT, ALP and bilirubin.

GGT often falls over several weeks once alcohol is reduced, which makes it a useful marker to repeat. A value outside the range is a prompt for discussion with your practitioner and possibly your GP, not a diagnosis of liver disease.

Preparing for your test

Fasting is not required for GGT on its own. For the most representative reading, avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before your test, and let us know your usual weekly intake. Tell us about any prescribed medicines, herbal remedies or supplements, as several can raise liver enzymes. Continue prescribed medicines unless your doctor advises otherwise.

The Liver Function Check includes GGT with ALT, ALP, albumin and bilirubin, and Omnia Essential covers liver markers within a general check. You can compare every blood test and price in Chiswick.

Questions

How much is a GGT blood test in Chiswick?

A GGT blood test at Omnia Lifestyle costs £49. The price covers your sample in Chiswick, analysis at an accredited laboratory, a practitioner review and a GP feedback report on request.

Does GGT show how much I drink?

Regular alcohol intake often raises GGT, but so do other factors such as weight, a fatty liver and some medicines. It cannot measure alcohol intake precisely.

How long does GGT take to come down?

After cutting down on alcohol, GGT typically falls gradually over a few weeks. Your practitioner can suggest a sensible time to retest.

Should I have a full liver test instead?

If you have not had liver tests before, a full liver panel usually gives more useful information, as GGT is best read with the other liver enzymes.
