Manual therapy is a core part of physiotherapy and hands-on treatment, but it's often lumped in loosely with 'massage'. Here's what actually distinguishes it.
What manual therapy is
Manual therapy refers to hands-on techniques used by trained practitioners to assess and treat musculoskeletal issues, including joint mobilisation, manipulation and soft tissue techniques. Unlike general massage, it's typically applied with a specific clinical goal in mind.
Common techniques
- Joint mobilisation to improve range of movement
- Soft tissue release for tight or restricted muscles
- Targeted stretching and manipulation
What it's used for
Manual therapy is commonly used alongside physiotherapy to address joint stiffness, muscular restriction and movement limitations following injury or from chronic conditions.
