Frequently asked

What should I expect after manual therapy?

The short answer

Most people feel looser and move more easily straight after a session, sometimes with immediate pain relief. Mild soreness or a feeling like after exercise for a day or two is common, particularly after deep soft tissue work or early in a course. Drink water, keep moving gently, avoid heavy training the same day, and do the exercises you were given.

Straight after

Improved range of movement and reduced pain are common immediately, especially after joint mobilisation or manipulation. Some people feel light-headed or tired for a short while, particularly after neck treatment or a long session. Sit for a moment before driving.

The next day or two

Treatment soreness, similar to muscle ache after exercise, is normal, especially over areas where deep soft tissue work was done. It settles within 24 to 48 hours. Occasionally a symptom flares briefly before improving. Bruising after deep tissue work is uncommon but possible in people who bruise easily.

What to do

Keep moving gently; walking helps. Drink water. Avoid heavy training, long static postures and heavy lifting on the day of treatment. Apply heat to sore muscles if it feels good. Do the exercises you were given, which are what turn a temporary change into a lasting one.

What to avoid

Testing the treated area aggressively to see if it is fixed, particularly the day after manipulation. Sitting still for hours, which lets stiffness return.

When to contact us

Pain that is worse than before treatment and not settling within two days, new numbness, tingling or weakness, or anything that concerns you. These are unusual and we would rather hear from you. At Omnia in Chiswick you can reach the clinic on 020 4515 0000.

Between sessions

The interval is usually a week early on and longer as you improve. Note what changed and for how long, as this tells your clinician how to adjust the next session.
