Before the sample
When you arrive, we check your details, the test you have booked, and whether you have fasted if your test needs it. Tell us about any medicines you take, especially blood-thinning medicines, and if you have ever fainted during a blood test, so we can adapt, for example by letting you lie down.
Taking the sample
A soft strap (tourniquet) may be placed around your upper arm, the skin is cleaned, and a small needle is used to fill one or more tubes. You will feel a sharp scratch, which may be a little uncomfortable. Single-use equipment is used every time. The draw usually takes under ten minutes.
Afterwards
We press on the site and put a plaster or cotton wool on it. A small bruise is common and usually fades within a few days. You can carry on with your day straight away, and eat and drink normally if you were fasting.
Your results
Your sample is couriered to the Randox accredited laboratory the same day. Most results are back within a few working days. A practitioner then explains what is in range, what is borderline and what to do next, and a GP feedback report is available on request.
