A simple checklist
- Fasting. Only some tests need it, usually 8 to 12 hours with water allowed. See do I need to fast before a blood test.
- Water. Drinking water beforehand is fine, even when fasting, and can make the sample easier to take.
- Medicines. Keep taking prescribed medicines unless your doctor has told you otherwise, and tell us what you take, especially blood-thinning medicines.
- Supplements. Biotin, found in many hair, skin and nail products, can affect some test results, including thyroid tests. Tell us if you take it and we will advise when to pause it.
- Exercise. Hard exercise the day before can raise some markers, such as muscle enzymes and liver enzymes, so keep it light.
- Timing. Some tests, such as some hormone tests, are best taken at a particular time of day or point in your cycle. We tell you when you book.
- Clothing. A top with sleeves that roll up easily helps.
If you are nervous
Tell us if you are anxious about needles or have fainted before. You can lie down for the sample, bring someone with you, and take your time. See what happens at a blood test appointment.
