When a private test makes sense
- A test your GP has not offered, such as vitamin D, ferritin or a hormone check when you have no clear symptoms.
- A wider health check, for example cholesterol, blood sugar, liver and kidney function together.
- Monitoring a marker you are working on, such as HbA1c, ferritin or vitamin D, at a time that suits you.
- Time and explanation: a quicker appointment and a practitioner who goes through every result with you.
When the NHS is the better route
NHS blood tests are free when your GP requests them. If you have new, severe or worsening symptoms, such as unexplained weight loss, bleeding, chest pain or breathlessness, see your GP or call NHS 111, or 999 in an emergency. A private test should never delay that.
Getting good value
More markers is not always better. Large panels can produce borderline results that cause worry without changing anything. Start with the question you want answered, and choose the smallest test that answers it. Our test finder suggests a panel in three questions, and your practitioner confirms the choice before any sample is taken. Our guide to private blood tests explained covers the options in more detail.
