Frequently asked

How many physiotherapy sessions will I need?

The short answer

Most people need between three and eight sessions. A simple muscle strain or acute back pain may settle in two to four; a long-standing problem, post-surgery rehabilitation or a sports injury usually takes six to twelve over several weeks. Your physiotherapist should give you an estimate at the first appointment and review it as you progress.

Typical ranges

Recent, simple problems such as a strained muscle, a stiff neck from sleeping badly or a first episode of low back pain often need two to four sessions. Problems that have been there for months, recurring injuries, tendon conditions and joint pain typically need six to eight. Rehabilitation after surgery such as a knee or shoulder repair, or return to sport after a serious injury, can run to twelve or more sessions spread over two to four months, though later sessions are often spaced out.

What changes the number

How long you have had the problem, how severe it is, your age and general health, how consistently you do the exercises between sessions, and whether the cause is something you can change. Someone who does their rehabilitation daily will usually need fewer appointments than someone who only does it at the clinic. Work and lifestyle matter too: a desk-based neck problem recurs if the desk is not changed.

How often

Weekly at first is common, sometimes twice weekly for acute injuries. As you improve, sessions move to fortnightly and then monthly, with the emphasis shifting from hands-on treatment to exercise progression and self-management.

How to know it is working

You should notice something by the second or third session: less pain, better movement, or a longer gap before symptoms return. If nothing has changed by session four, the plan should change, whether that means a different approach, imaging, or referral onward. A good physiotherapist will say so rather than keep booking you in.

At Omnia

Your first appointment at our Chiswick clinic is 70 minutes, long enough for a full assessment and treatment on the same day, and you leave with an estimate of how many sessions you are likely to need and why. We review that estimate as we go and we do not treat past the point where you can manage on your own.
