A blood test measuring troponin T, a protein released when heart muscle is damaged, offered for planned follow-up of heart questions with your practitioner and never as a substitute for emergency care for chest pain.
Troponin T is part of the machinery that makes heart muscle contract. When heart muscle cells are injured, troponin leaks into the blood. In hospitals, high-sensitivity troponin tests are central to diagnosing heart attacks, using repeated samples over a few hours.
Small amounts of troponin can be found in the blood of healthy people, and levels can be persistently raised with age, high blood pressure, heart muscle thickening, heart failure, kidney disease and after very intense endurance exercise. In a clinic setting, a troponin T result gives background information for a planned discussion about heart health.
The price includes the sample taken at our Chiswick clinic, analysis at the Randox accredited laboratory, a practitioner review of your result, and a GP feedback report on request.
Your report shows your troponin T level with the laboratory reference range. A level above the range indicates some degree of heart muscle stress or injury, which can have many causes, both acute and long term. Your practitioner will recommend that you discuss any raised result promptly with your GP, who may arrange further tests such as an ECG or echocardiogram.
A single clinic result cannot diagnose or exclude a heart attack. If your level sits outside the range, treat it as a point to discuss rather than a diagnosis.
There is no fasting requirement. Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 to 48 hours before the test, as very intense exercise can raise troponin. Stop biotin supplements for at least 48 hours, as biotin can interfere with some immunoassays. If you have chest pain, sudden or severe breathlessness, or symptoms of a clot such as a painful swollen leg, call 999 or go to A&E immediately rather than booking a test.
Heart strain is also assessed with NT-proBNP, available as a separate test, and our cholesterol tests look at cardiovascular risk. Troponin T is included in Omnia Signature. See every blood test and price in Chiswick.
The Troponin T test costs £129. It includes the blood sample at our Chiswick clinic, analysis at the Randox accredited laboratory, a practitioner review of your result, and a GP feedback report on request.
No. Chest pain needs urgent medical assessment. Please call 999 or go straight to A&E.
Heart failure, high blood pressure, kidney disease, heart muscle inflammation and very intense exercise can all raise troponin. Your GP will consider these causes.
Troponin reflects injury to heart muscle cells, while NT-proBNP reflects stretch and strain on the heart. They are often read together.
