Mesothelin blood test in Chiswick

A blood test for mesothelin, a tumour-associated marker sometimes measured in people with significant past asbestos exposure, always read alongside a clinical assessment and never used on its own.

What the test measures

Mesothelin is a protein found on the surface of mesothelial cells, which line the chest, abdomen and other body cavities. A soluble form can be measured in the blood. It has been studied mainly in relation to mesothelioma, a condition linked to asbestos exposure, and in some ovarian and pancreatic conditions.

Mesothelin is a tumour-associated marker. It can be raised for a number of reasons, including reduced kidney function and increasing age, and it can be normal in people who do have disease. For these reasons it is not a screening test and cannot confirm or exclude cancer. It is used, where helpful, alongside imaging and specialist assessment.

The price includes the sample taken at our Chiswick clinic, analysis at the Randox accredited laboratory, a practitioner review of your result, and a GP feedback report on request.

Who it is for

  • You have had significant asbestos exposure in the past and your specialist has asked for a mesothelin level.
  • You are under follow-up with a consultant who uses mesothelin to monitor change over time.
  • You would like a baseline measurement to discuss with your doctor alongside other assessments.
  • You are already having investigations and your clinician has asked for this marker to be added.

Understanding your result

Your report shows your mesothelin level and the laboratory reference range. A level above the range may be seen in several situations, including kidney impairment, and does not on its own mean disease is present. A level within the range does not rule anything out.

Single results are of limited value, and specialists often look at the trend across several measurements together with scans and examination. Your practitioner will review the result with you and, where appropriate, recommend that you discuss it with your GP or specialist.

Preparing for your test

No fasting is needed. Please tell us about any known kidney problems and any recent scans or investigations, as these help your practitioner interpret the level. If you have symptoms such as breathlessness, chest pain, a persistent cough or unexplained weight loss, please see your GP rather than relying on a blood test.

Mesothelin is one of the markers included in Omnia Signature, our most comprehensive panel. You can browse every blood test and price in Chiswick.

Questions

How much is a mesothelin test in Chiswick?

The Mesothelin test is £159. It includes the blood sample at our Chiswick clinic, analysis at the Randox accredited laboratory, a practitioner review of your result, and a GP feedback report on request.

Can a mesothelin test detect mesothelioma?

No blood test can diagnose or rule out mesothelioma. Mesothelin is a tumour-associated marker that may support a specialist assessment, but diagnosis relies on imaging and tissue tests.

Why might my mesothelin be raised?

Raised levels can be linked to reduced kidney function, age and a range of other conditions, not only cancer. Your practitioner will look at your result alongside your history.

Should I test if I worked with asbestos?

It is best to discuss this first with your GP, who can advise on symptoms to watch for and whether any monitoring is appropriate. A mesothelin level can then be considered as part of that discussion.
