A urine test that checks for isocyanate breakdown products, used to monitor exposure in jobs such as vehicle spray painting and foam or adhesive work.
Isocyanates are chemicals used in two pack paints, lacquers, foams, adhesives and some coatings. Breathing them in, or getting them on the skin, can cause occupational asthma and skin problems. This test measures isocyanate breakdown products in urine, which shows whether a person has recently taken in isocyanates.
In the UK, the Health and Safety Executive recommends biological monitoring for workers exposed to isocyanates, so employers can check that controls such as spray booths and air fed masks are working.
The price covers your sample taken at our Chiswick clinic, analysis at an accredited laboratory through our Randox laboratory partner and a clear results report. If you would like a doctor's view, a GP review and consultation can be arranged on request, at an additional cost.
Your report shows the level of isocyanate breakdown products in your urine, alongside the reference range provided by the laboratory. A raised result suggests exposure is getting through and that controls should be reviewed. It does not on its own diagnose occupational asthma.
If you have new breathing problems, wheeze or chest tightness at work, please speak to your GP or occupational health provider.
Isocyanate breakdown products leave the body quickly, so the urine sample is best given at the end of a working period with exposure. We talk through timing, and confirm the expected timing of your results, when you book. Corporate bookings for several staff can be arranged.
