The Hepatitis B Immunity test measures hepatitis B surface antibody to show whether you are protected against hepatitis B, usually after vaccination, and is often needed for healthcare work, study or travel.
Hepatitis B is a liver infection spread through blood and body fluids. The hepatitis B vaccine teaches the immune system to make antibodies against the surface protein of the virus, known as anti-HBs or surface antibody. People who have recovered from a natural infection also usually have surface antibodies.
This test measures the level of surface antibody in your blood. It is the standard way to check whether a vaccine course has worked, and is commonly required by employers for healthcare, dental, laboratory and care roles. Testing is confidential and non-judgemental.
The price includes your sample taken at our Chiswick clinic, analysis at the Randox accredited laboratory, a review of your result with an Omnia practitioner, and a GP feedback report on request.
Your report gives your surface antibody level. In UK practice, a level of 100 mIU/mL or more after vaccination is generally taken as a good response, while 10 to 99 mIU/mL is a lower response that may need a booster, and below 10 mIU/mL suggests the vaccine has not provided protection. Your practitioner will interpret your level against current UK guidance and any employer requirements.
This test checks immunity, not infection. If you may have been exposed, other tests are needed, such as the surface antigen and core antibody, with a window period of about three months for a reliable result. An unexpected result simply starts a discussion about what to do next.
You may eat and drink as usual before your appointment. If you are checking your response to vaccination, the test is most useful one to four months after the final dose of the course. Bring your vaccination record or any occupational health paperwork, so your practitioner can confirm what your employer needs.
If you have had a possible exposure, our STI and hepatitis tests include the hepatitis B surface antigen, and the Hepatitis B Core Antibody test shows past infection. Our overview page gathers every blood test and price in Chiswick.
The Hepatitis B Immunity test costs £59 at our Chiswick clinic. This includes your blood sample, analysis at the Randox accredited laboratory, a confidential practitioner review and a GP feedback report on request.
One to four months after completing the course is usually recommended, as antibody levels are easiest to interpret during that window.
A low level may mean you need a booster dose or a repeat course. Your practitioner will explain the options and your GP or occupational health team can arrange vaccination.
No. It shows protection only. To check for infection, the surface antigen and core antibody tests are needed.
