GM-CSF blood test in Chiswick

A GM-CSF blood test measures granulocyte macrophage colony stimulating factor, an immune signalling protein. It is a specialist research marker, used alongside other tests to explore immune and inflammation questions with a practitioner.

What the test measures

Granulocyte macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) is a cytokine, one of the chemical messengers the immune system uses to coordinate a response. It is produced by several cell types, including T cells and cells lining blood vessels, and it encourages the bone marrow to produce certain white blood cells and activates them when there is infection or inflammation.

GM-CSF has been studied in inflammatory and autoimmune conditions, and medicines that target it are under research. As a blood test, however, it is an emerging, specialist marker. Levels in healthy people are usually very low, it is not part of routine NHS testing, and it has limited use as a stand-alone screen. It is best read with established markers such as CRP and a full blood count.

The price includes the blood sample taken at our Chiswick clinic, analysis at the Randox accredited laboratory, a practitioner review of your result with you, and a GP feedback report on request.

Who it is for

  • Your practitioner has suggested an immune signalling marker as part of a wider assessment.
  • You live with an inflammatory or autoimmune condition and are exploring additional information.
  • You are already having inflammation markers and want added detail.
  • You understand this is a research-based marker and want a baseline value.

Understanding your result

Your report shows your GM-CSF value and the laboratory reference range. A raised level can reflect active immune signalling, which may be seen with infection, inflammation or some autoimmune conditions. Levels can change quickly with short-lived illness, so one reading gives only a snapshot.

There is no agreed way to use GM-CSF alone to diagnose or monitor a condition. Your practitioner will interpret it in context, and a value outside the range is a prompt for discussion, not a diagnosis.

Preparing for your test

No fasting is needed. Try to test when you have been free of colds, infections and vaccinations for at least two weeks, as these can temporarily change immune signalling. Tell us about any steroid, immune-modifying or biological medicines you take. We will confirm any other preparation when you book.

For a more established view of inflammation, the Omnia Essential Plus includes CRP and a full blood count. GM-CSF is part of the immune markers in Omnia Signature. You can also see every blood test and price in Chiswick.

A GM-CSF blood test at Omnia Lifestyle costs £109. This includes the sample at our Chiswick clinic, laboratory analysis, a practitioner review of your result and a GP feedback report on request.

Is GM-CSF a routine test?

No. It is a specialist marker mainly used in research and in-depth assessments. Most people looking at inflammation start with CRP and a blood count.

What does a high GM-CSF mean?

It suggests increased immune signalling, which can have many causes, including a recent infection. Your practitioner will read it alongside your other results.

Can GM-CSF diagnose an autoimmune condition?

No. Autoimmune conditions are diagnosed through clinical assessment and validated tests, usually by a specialist.
