This blood test measures glutathione inside red blood cells, a key antioxidant the body makes for itself. People book it to explore antioxidant status alongside nutrition, a restrictive diet or a wider wellness review.
Glutathione is a small molecule built from three amino acids: cysteine, glutamate and glycine. It is found in almost every cell and helps neutralise reactive oxygen species, recycle other antioxidants such as vitamins C and E, and support the liver in processing medicines and toxins. Measuring it inside red cells gives a more stable picture than measuring it in plasma, where levels change quickly.
Glutathione levels can fall with poor protein intake, heavy alcohol use, smoking, some chronic illnesses and ageing. However, red cell glutathione is not part of routine NHS testing, and there are no agreed guidelines on when to treat a low result. It is best seen as one piece of a wider nutritional and lifestyle picture rather than a test that gives a clear answer on its own.
The price includes your sample at our Chiswick clinic, analysis at the Randox accredited laboratory, a review of your result with an Omnia practitioner, and a GP feedback report on request.
Your report shows your red cell glutathione level with the laboratory reference range. A level within range suggests adequate antioxidant capacity in your red cells. A lower level may reflect diet, alcohol, smoking or oxidative stress from illness, while higher levels are less often a concern.
Because evidence on how to act on this marker is still limited, any unexpected value is something to talk through with your practitioner rather than a diagnosis. They may look at diet, alcohol intake and other markers, such as liver function, before suggesting changes. Starting supplements is best discussed with your GP or pharmacist first, particularly if you take other medicines.
Fasting is not essential, but a morning sample after an overnight fast is often preferred so results can be compared over time. Avoid glutathione, N-acetylcysteine and high-dose antioxidant supplements for 48 hours beforehand unless your practitioner advises otherwise. We confirm any preparation when you book.
For a broader look at nutrition, the Nutritional and Digestive Health check covers key vitamins and minerals, and a liver function test shows how the organ that uses much of your glutathione is working. Look through every blood test and price in Chiswick too.
The glutathione (red cell) test is £269 at Omnia Lifestyle. The price covers your blood sample at our Chiswick clinic, laboratory analysis, a practitioner review and a GP feedback report on request.
Red cell glutathione is more stable than plasma glutathione, which changes quickly after sampling. It gives a steadier view of your antioxidant status.
Not necessarily. Diet, alcohol and smoking often matter more. Your practitioner can talk through options, and supplements should be discussed with your GP or pharmacist.
No. It reflects antioxidant status and is read with other markers and your health history.
