Amphiregulin blood test in Chiswick

This blood test measures amphiregulin, a growth factor involved in tissue repair and cell growth. It is a specialist research marker, best used alongside other tests and a practitioner assessment rather than as a stand-alone check.

What the test measures

Amphiregulin is a signalling protein in the epidermal growth factor (EGF) family. It binds to receptors on the surface of cells and encourages them to grow, divide and repair. It plays a part in normal processes such as wound healing, development of breast tissue and recovery of the lining of the airways and gut after injury, and it is also produced by some immune cells during inflammation.

Researchers have studied amphiregulin in inflammation, lung and skin conditions, and in some cancers, where growth signalling can be overactive. However, it is an emerging marker. There is no agreed role for it in routine NHS care, and it has limited use as a stand-alone screen. Its value lies in adding detail to a wider assessment, often as part of a broad panel.

The price includes the blood sample at our Chiswick clinic, analysis at the Randox accredited laboratory, a practitioner review of your result and a GP feedback report on request.

Who it is for

  • You are having a broad specialist panel and your practitioner wants growth and repair markers included.
  • Your specialist has asked for amphiregulin as part of follow-up.
  • You are interested in research markers and understand they are interpreted cautiously.
  • You would like a baseline to compare with future tests under practitioner guidance.

Understanding your result

Your report shows the laboratory reference range. Because amphiregulin is a research marker, a raised or low level does not point to any particular condition by itself. Levels can be influenced by inflammation, recent injury, smoking and other factors, and the evidence for interpreting single readings is still developing.

Amphiregulin is not a cancer test and cannot diagnose, rule out or screen for cancer. Any result outside the range is a prompt for discussion with your practitioner, who will consider it alongside your symptoms and established tests, and suggest your GP where something needs following up.

Preparing for your test

No specific preparation is known to be needed, and fasting is not usually required. Try to test when you are well rather than during an acute illness. We confirm any preparation when you book.

Amphiregulin is included in the Omnia Signature (£961), where it is read alongside more than 160 other markers. For a more established general health check, see the Standard Screen, or browse every blood test and price in Chiswick.
