This blood test measures the level of aluminium in your blood. It is booked by people with possible exposure at work, those with reduced kidney function, or anyone wanting reassurance about metal exposure.
Aluminium is the most common metal in the earth's crust and is found in small amounts in food, water, some medicines such as antacids, cosmetics and cookware. Healthy kidneys remove the small quantities we absorb, so blood levels are normally very low.
Higher levels are mainly seen in two groups. The first is people with significantly reduced kidney function, particularly those on dialysis, who cannot clear aluminium efficiently. The second is people with heavy occupational exposure, for example in smelting, welding or some manufacturing. Very high levels over time can affect bone, the brain and the blood, though this is uncommon outside these situations. Some joint replacements can also release small amounts of metal.
The price includes the blood sample at our Chiswick clinic, analysis at the Randox accredited laboratory, a practitioner review of your result and a GP feedback report on request.
Your report shows the laboratory reference range. A level inside the range is reassuring. A raised level suggests recent or ongoing exposure, or reduced clearance by the kidneys, and your practitioner will look for the likely source with you. Because aluminium is everywhere, contamination of the sample is a real possibility, so an unexpectedly high result is often repeated before any conclusions are drawn.
A blood test reflects mainly recent exposure and does not measure how much aluminium is stored in bone over the long term. A result outside the range is a prompt for discussion, not a diagnosis, and significant findings should be shared with your GP or occupational health team.
No fasting is needed. Please avoid aluminium-containing antacids for 24 hours beforehand if it is safe to do so, and tell us about any medicines, supplements or metal implants. If you work with aluminium, let us know when your last shift was. We use sample tubes suitable for trace metal testing.
Kidney health is closely linked to how aluminium is cleared, so our kidney function tests are a natural pairing. For a broader health picture, see the Standard Screen, or browse every blood test and price in Chiswick.
The Aluminium test costs £249 at Omnia Lifestyle in Chiswick. This includes the blood sample, accredited laboratory analysis, a practitioner review and a GP feedback report if you would like one.
Very little aluminium is absorbed from deodorants or cookware, and in people with healthy kidneys it is usually cleared. These are rarely the cause of a high result.
Memory problems have many causes, and a blood aluminium level cannot explain them on its own. If you have memory concerns, please speak to your GP.
Trace contamination can affect metal tests, so a surprising result is often checked again before any decisions are made.
