Frequently asked

I am scared of needles. Can I still have a blood test?

The short answer

Yes. Many people feel anxious about needles. Tell us when you book and when you arrive, and we will go at your pace. You can lie down for the sample, look away, bring someone with you and use slow breathing. If you have fainted before, lying down helps prevent it.

Tell us first

Let us know when you book and again when you arrive. Knowing in advance means we can give you more time, explain each step, and have you lie down rather than sit if you prefer.

Things that help

  • Lie down if you have ever felt faint or fainted during a blood test.
  • Look away and talk, or listen to music on headphones.
  • Breathe slowly, in through the nose and out through the mouth.
  • Drink water beforehand, and eat if your test does not need fasting.
  • Bring someone with you for support.

What it feels like

You will feel a sharp scratch as the needle goes in, which may be a little uncomfortable, and the draw usually takes under ten minutes. Afterwards, sit or lie for a few minutes if you feel light-headed, and have a drink.

If anxiety is severe

A strong fear of needles is common and can be treated. If it stops you having tests or care you need, talk to your GP, who can discuss support such as NHS talking therapies.
