What the eyes are exposed to
In a full-body pod such as NovoTHOR, LEDs surround the body, so without protection the eyes would receive bright red light and invisible near-infrared for 20 minutes. Red light at these intensities is uncomfortable rather than dangerous, and near-infrared is absorbed by the cornea and lens before reaching the retina in any meaningful amount at LED intensities. Goggles remove both the discomfort and the small theoretical risk, which is why they are standard.
Where there is real risk
Lasers are different from LEDs. A clinical laser such as THOR is applied by a practitioner to the treatment site, never towards the eyes, and both practitioner and client wear protective eyewear. Home devices are the area of concern: high-output panels used close to the face, or masks with LEDs positioned near the eyes and worn with eyes open, can cause afterimages, headaches and, with prolonged misuse, potential retinal stress. Follow the manufacturer's guidance and keep eyes closed or covered.
Red light for eye health
You may have read about studies using brief morning exposure to 670 nm light to improve retinal function in older adults. These used a very specific low dose and protocol, and the results are early. They do not mean general red light therapy is good for the eyes, and self-treating eye conditions with a home device is not advisable. If you have an eye condition, ask an ophthalmologist.
Who should take extra care
People with retinal disease, recent eye surgery, or on photosensitising medication should mention it before treatment. Contact lenses are fine to wear under goggles.
