Measurements
Styku's depth camera captures the body surface at high resolution, and validation studies comparing its circumferences with tape measurements show agreement within a few millimetres, with less variation than manual measuring because there is no tape tension or placement error. Repeat scans of the same person under the same conditions are highly reproducible. For waist, hip, thigh and arm measurements, it is more consistent than a human with a tape.
Body fat estimate
Styku estimates body fat from body shape using equations validated against DEXA scanning. The estimate is reasonable at population level but can be off for individuals with unusual builds, high muscle mass or particular fat distributions. Treat it as a trend: if it falls across successive scans, fat is likely falling, but for the actual figure use a direct method.
What affects accuracy
Clothing: fitted clothing is essential, since loose fabric is scanned as body. Posture: standing in the same position each time. Time of day and recent food, which change abdominal shape. Hair tied back and no bulky accessories.
Comparing with other methods
Tape measure: Styku is more consistent. Calipers: operator dependent and measure only subcutaneous fat. Bioelectrical impedance such as InBody: measures internal composition directly, which Styku does not. DEXA: the reference standard for body fat, but involves a small radiation dose and is not practical for frequent tracking. Styku's strength is precise, repeatable, radiation-free shape and measurement tracking.

We use Styku for measurements, shape and posture, and InBody for muscle, fat and water, at our Chiswick clinic. Scans are done under consistent conditions so comparisons are meaningful.
