A newer blood test that measures several forms of proBNP, released when the heart muscle is under strain.
When the heart muscle is stretched or working harder than usual, it releases B-type natriuretic peptides. NT-proBNP is the best known of these and is used in the NHS to help decide who needs a heart scan. PAN-proBNP is a newer test that measures several forms of proBNP in the blood, aiming to give a fuller picture of heart strain.
Levels rise with age and are often higher in people with reduced kidney function or atrial fibrillation, so a result is always read in context.
The price covers your sample taken at our Chiswick clinic, analysis at the Randox accredited laboratory and a clear results report. If you would like a doctor's view, a GP review and consultation can be arranged on request, at an additional cost.
Your report shows your PAN-proBNP level alongside the laboratory reference range. A raised level suggests the heart may be under strain and that further assessment, such as an echocardiogram, is worth discussing with your GP. A result outside the range is a prompt for discussion, not a diagnosis.
No fasting is needed and you should take your usual medicines. Once your sample reaches the laboratory, analysis usually takes about 72 hours, and this can be longer at busy times.
Please note that this is not an emergency test. If you have chest pain, sudden or severe breathlessness, or a painful swollen leg, call 999 or go to A&E rather than booking a test.
For the established NHS marker, see our NT-proBNP heart strain test. You can also browse every blood test and price in Chiswick.
Outside London? We can arrange this test at a partner clinic near you, at the same price. See private blood tests across the UK.
The PAN-proBNP test is £139. It includes the sample at our Chiswick clinic, analysis at the Randox accredited laboratory and your results report. A GP review and consultation are available if you need them, at an additional cost.
NT-proBNP measures one fragment and is the marker used in NICE guidance. PAN-proBNP measures several forms of proBNP. If your GP has asked for NT-proBNP, book that test.
No. Chest pain or sudden breathlessness needs urgent care. Call 999 or go to A&E.
