Measures the level of apolipoprotein E in your blood, a protein that helps the liver clear fat-carrying particles. A specialist addition to cholesterol testing, it is a protein measurement rather than a genetic APOE test.
Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) is a protein found on several types of lipoprotein, including VLDL, chylomicron remnants and some HDL particles. It acts as a signal that helps the liver recognise and take up these particles, which is important for clearing fats from the blood after meals. ApoE is also made in the brain, where it helps move cholesterol between cells.
This test measures how much ApoE protein is in your blood. It is different from APOE genotyping, a genetic test that identifies which version of the gene you carry, such as e2, e3 or e4. The amount of ApoE protein cannot tell you your genotype, and it does not give information about dementia risk. It is a specialist marker, mainly used alongside a full cholesterol profile. The price includes the blood sample taken at our Chiswick clinic, analysis at the Randox accredited laboratory, a review of your result with an Omnia practitioner and a GP feedback report on request.
Your report shows your ApoE level with the laboratory reference range. Raised levels can be seen when fat-carrying particles are not being cleared efficiently, for example with high triglycerides, some inherited lipid disorders, an underactive thyroid or poorly controlled diabetes. Low levels are less common. The result is interpreted with your cholesterol, triglycerides and other apolipoproteins rather than on its own.
If your practitioner thinks an inherited lipid condition is possible, they may suggest you see your GP or a lipid clinic, where genetic testing may be considered. If your figure falls outside the range, it calls for a conversation, not a firm conclusion.
Because ApoE is linked to how fats are cleared after eating, please fast for 10 to 12 hours before your sample, with water only, unless we advise otherwise when you book. Keep taking prescribed medicines and let us know if you take cholesterol or thyroid treatment.
ApoE is included with other lipid markers in our Heart Health check and in Advanced GP3. See also every blood test and price in Chiswick.
The apolipoprotein E test costs £99. This covers your sample at our W4 clinic, analysis at an accredited laboratory, a practitioner review and a GP feedback report if you would like one.
No. It measures the amount of ApoE protein in your blood. Finding out whether you carry APOE e4 requires a separate genetic test, which is best discussed with a genetic counsellor or specialist.
No. The ApoE protein level is not used to assess dementia risk. It is used to help understand how your body handles fats.
Yes, a fasting sample is usually preferred because fat levels after a meal can affect the result. We will confirm the exact preparation when you book.
